View Full Version : Where Can I Park My Scooter?
Downtown Cincinnati has many problems. But one of the most senseless has been the utter lack of scooter parking. Thankfully, Cincinnati City Council has responded to this travesty, and there will now be ample parking for scooters downtown.
Scooter Parking Aplenty! (http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100922/NEWS0108/9230308/1172/City-OKs-more-scooter-parking)

Each [space] holds from two to four vehicles, depending on size. The administration tracked the use of the spaces in the spring and summer of 2009, finding that they were well-used and even overflowing on a regular basis.
I really don't see the problem with making more spaces available when each one holds more than one vehicle, and they are being used over capacity on a regular basis.

I too am relieved by Council's decision but in a spirit of inclusivity, wouldn't have it made sense to have places for segueways as well. And how about spots for the elderly and their hov-arounds?

Good point nick.

I guess it's a matter of priority spending on a limited budget. I like the idea of an annual scooter registration fee to cover the costs of city improvements specifically related to scooters.
Why can't 2 scooters park in a car parking spot?

1) This is coming out of the "speed hump" program budget. I'm a bigger fan of publicly funded 6-pack rings to be dumped in oceans. I lived on a dead-end street in Oakley that had these stupid shock-killers installed. As far as I am aware, there was never a single accident or injury on that street. Since this doesn't represent an overall increase in net spending, and in theory it takes away a speed hump somewhere in the city, I'm a big fan. I'd like to end the speed bump program entirely.
2) You're the lawyer, but I think the reason 2 scooters can't park in a parking spot is because it's against the law.

Plus Kahns, those speed bumps are terrible for snow removal, and yes, emergency response. When going on a response, we have to basically come to a complete stop before rolling over those things because of the weight.
As for scooter parking, all I wish was for more bicycle lanes and bike racks.
I HATE dayton.

Where's the pic of XU87 parking his Rascal at the office downtown?

No, I don't think it is against the law. I looked at the code and didn't see anything about it. But I did discover this gem: "When a vehicle is too large to be confined in a single space, only the meter nearest the hood or front end of said vehicle need be operated. " Sweet.
And you're the financial analyst - but even it was illegal to park two scooters in one metered parking space, isn't it cheaper to simply amend the code?

Awesome! I can park my bus at 3 meters and only pay the first?
Even if there isn't anything specific governing multiple vehicles in one spot, creating specific areas for scooter parking resolves potential issues regarding parking a vehicle too far from a meter (must be within 5 feet currently, which would make half of the scooters in a standard spot illegally parked) or repeat metering, which would either require installing as many meters as there are spaces for scooters or changing the code, which would affect all parking meters, or some other solution that would reduce the efficiency of the parking.
I'm not a scooter rider, but if everyone else was, it would free up parking for me, reduce pollution, reduce traffic on the highway and reduce demand for gas. Given that this expenditure is coming from an existing budgeted item (that I hate) and doesn't represent incremental spending, and that it addresses a need which seems to exist, I'm all for it.
As for the costs involved in amending the code, I can't even begin to estimate that. Especially if there are required printed copies issued in the event of a code change, I could see that being a pricy proposition. Certianly, you could wait and do it when you're doing another code change, which would reduce the incremental cost. Still, my guess is that you get multiple lawyers involved anytime you change the code, and we all know how rediculiously overpriced those guys are...
