Xavier went into Columbus with 25 players to face a well-manned Ohio State team Sunday night. Xavier kicked off to Ohio State and they got a good return out of the kick past midfield. Similar to last week, the opposing offense drove down the field to go up early 8-0 (due to lack of uprights the teams had to go for 2). Several defensive stops were traded by both teams, including a period of 3 straight turnovers forced by Xavier's defense made up of Andrew Bodziony and David Pergolini each getting an interception then Grad Student Jeff Dayton forcing a fumble recovered by Freshman Tyler Skeens. Chris Greenwood connected with Jon Deters for a Musketeer touchdown near the end of the first quarter and X missed the conversion to go down 8-6. In the second quarter Xavier was pinned back inside the 20 and forced to punt which Ohio State fielded the short kick and was able to return it for a touchdown but the Muskies stopped the conversion to only go down 14-6 at half. The Xavier offense drove down the field with the help of WRs Dan and Jon Deters and Nick Sexton, TE Scott McLoughlin, and RB Eric Miles to start the second half to tie it up on a Chris Greenwood TD run from inside the 5. Xavier's defense held and when the offense got the ball back they drove once again and scored on another Greenwood to J. Deters TD pass in the 3rd to go up 20-14. Late in the third on an Ohio State drive the quarterback was able to scramble around and toss the ball deep right before crossing the line of scrimmage to a receiver that got behind the secondary for a TD, but the defense held ground and stopped the 2pt conversion to keep the game tied at 20 going into the 4th. Xavier's defense held to start the 4th but with less than 10 minutes left on a 2nd and long Ohio State threw a deep ball where the receiver out jumped the safety and ran the 10 yards after the catch for a score. Once again the defense stopped the 2 pt conversion and Ohio State was in the lead 26-20 late in the 4th. Despite the defense holding on the few other times the Buckeyes got the ball back the offense didn't manage to drive to tie the game. After a turnover on downs in the last minute Ohio State went into victory formation and Xavier dropped to 1-1. Xavier's now 0-1 in conference play with their next opponent being at conference foe Southern Illinois-Edwardsville next Saturday afternoon. The Muskies will look to push above .500 and get a conference win after falling just a few plays short in a good game in Columbus.

Bodzo:

Great recap of the game; I would have loved to have made it to Columbus but scheduling did not work out. Sounds like the Muskies played very competitive football and hopefully the enthusiasm carries over to a win at SIUE on Saturday. Good luck!
