Sorry for those of you who are Bearcat football fans, but, as I sit here, watching North Freakin Carolina State dismantle UC early, (we're awaiting confirmation of a second Wolfpack touchdown) I can't help but think that they've fallen off a lot.

The score stood - two back-to-back 90+ yard drives already.

A long way to go, but damn.

Starting to think UC's program was a result of good recruiting by Mark Dantonio and good coaching by Brian Kelly. I'm starting to wonder if Brian Kelly was much of a recruiter because the talent level has certainly fallen off.

Too bad for UC the Oklahoma game is this year and not last year. They're going to get slaughtered by the Sooners.

NC State should be up at least 3 TDs. The only team stopping NC State is NC State.
I hope they don't give up this lead........COME ON PACK!!!

First half was really bad football. TO's by both teams, guys fumbling and dropping balls. UC looks terrible.

The Sooners will absolutely kill the Bearcats. I thought they would drop off without Kelly but not to the degree that I am seeing thus far. But hey, at least they have Mick Cronin.

HA HA HA!!!!!!!!

just a great game to watch. UC has a terrible defense and a terrible offensive line.
I'm gonna laugh at Butch Jones for the next couple years. This is back to the UC football we know and love. Oklahoma might beat em by 50.

I had UC fans argue with me that they wouldn't miss a beat losing Pike and Gilyard cause they have Collaros and Binn (some tried to argue that combo was much better than Pike-Gilyard). Yeah, hows that working out? They should have to lowercase the "UC" in those ridiculous "bUCkeye state" shirts they made last year. Say what you want about OSU, but they would not start off a season losing to the likes of Fresno State and NC State.

And right now TSNMike is trying to argue with me on twitter that UC is relevant in basketball because they took X to overtime last year.

those ridiculous "bUCkeye state" shirts they made last year.

I enjoy UC football. I do not enjoy those stupid shirts. If they were mildy amusing last year when UC was briefly ranked above Ohio State for the first time ever, they've lost all of the shine this year, and I can't believe I've seen people wearing them. I don't own one of those shirts, and I mock anyone I know that would even hint that UC's football program should be considered in the same equation as Ohio State.

However, I'm not so young that I forget Andy Mac exclaiming "Number 1 in the country, but number 2 in the city" when X knocked off a number 1 ranked UC basketball program. If we, as Xavier fans, begrudge the UC football fans for taking pride in their first venture into success, then we've forgotten a chapter of our own history.

I apologize.

Actually, I don't root for them, and I simply chimed in to suggest that early indications are such that it appears as though a BCS bowl for them this year may be a tad difficult to make.

The only way they could pull that off again is to obviously become "BE Champion" and the only reason they could do that is because of their pathetic level of league competition.

We all know, WVU should have lost to Marshall last week. WVU. Marshall. It's definitely time to add Villanova to the conference for football to strengthen it.

They have lost 3 of 4 since Kelly left with the only win being a buy game at home. The losses have not been pretty. Maybe that Kelly guy had an idea or two.

I don't know what some of the guys around here think they are doing by supporting UC Football.

Most UC fans are actually frustrated over Brian Kelly's ability to recruit. He won with Mark Dantonio's recruits and now they are left with an empty cupboard.
Brian Kelly is gonna have one heck of a time recruiting at Notre Dame with their admission standards. He might be a great offensive mind, but if you don't have the players you won't win football games. Brian Kelly would be sitting at 1-2 with UC this year. They just don't have the talent.
The jury will be out with Kelly's recruits to Notre Dame.
Meanwhile, Butch Jones is left with inferior talent and a gladdenguy smile. :D

There is Xavier and there is uc. Period. End of discussion. No Xavier Fan shall venture to the darkside. Ever.

I will never forget going to the A-10 Tournament in Sean Millers first year down at the arena on the river. After Xavier was eliminated and the X fans were leaving the building some knuckledraggers from clifton took time away from their busy social life and study time to go to the arena and mock Xavier fans, this included Old men and young children, no one was spared. I vowed at that time to NEVER support anything associated with that "university".

The only time I will ever go to Clifton is if I have a 3 day dump building up in my colon and I need to leave a deposit for the locals.

I wondered why they didn't go after Harbaugh from Stanford for the recruiting / academics reasons. My understanding is that Kelly negotiated with the staff at Notre Dame for a number of 'exceptions' to Notre Dame admissions policy for football players so that he could field a more competitive team. I don't know if that is true or not though.

I still think it is a little too early to condem Kelly at Notre Dame or Butch Jones at UC. Things are looking much worse for Jones though, with Oklahoma coming up next week.

Did a lot of UC players defect when Kelly left, or is UC's current talent indicative of Kelly's recruiting?

The jury is definitely still out on Kelly's recruiting at ND, but he currently has the 6th ranked class in the country according to rivals and has done something Weis and Willingham could never do...sign a couple elite defensive players. (sans Teo)

I don't revel in UC's troubles, I just never got into the whole UC football thing. I will say this: My seven year old son loves going to UC games. The game day environment down there is fun and fan friendly.

Seems like I remember that Fat ass Weis and Ty had "Top 10 recruiting" classes too. We saw how that worked out. Recruiting rankings are worth the paper in my toilet bowl- look no further than David "Freaking" West.

Anyone who is a Xavier person should revel in SucKS troubles. They are a rival, people. Anything that is bad for them lessens their relevance. And the fact that you are indocrinating your son is inappropriate. Take him to Xavier club football games. He's 7. Trust me, he doesn't know the difference at this point.

The above

My 7 year old can certainly tell the difference between a game at Norwood HS and a stadium with 25,000 people in it. He's not blind. Sorry, that dog don't hunt. I've also have a relative on the team and my neighbor's kid is also on the team, so I am going to pull for them to do well. I've been to a total of 3 games (2 last year) in my life, so I don't really think that negates my loyalty to XU. You should probably give that a rest.

And on the college football thing, as a posters have said here before you're better suited not to opine. The fact that you think recruiting rankings in college football mean nothing show us as much. Take a look at the last 15 national champions and then look at the recruiting rankings for the 3-4 years preceeding those NC's. You can't win if you don't recruit...period.

Sure there are going to be players who are late bloomers and are missed by the rankings but those are the exception and not the rule. Why are you excited about Dez Wells, Dee Davis and company? Because they're highly rated recruits.

Just jabbing you on the SucKS thing Smails.

As to the recruiting rankings, all we heard about for so many years on ND was that
they had all of these fantastic recruiting classes with all of this talent. Well, the record still has been mediocre- certainly not up to the recruit "rankings". I'm not stupid, however. I would say that Ohio State gets a better class every year than the Borecats. I would also say that Florida and Alabama get a better class than Ohio State. Those are rankings I can believe in.

But sorry. I watch with interest who XU recruits, for sure. As far as "getting excited", not me until I see them on a Xavier court. Most of the "experts" that see these basketball guys, don't necessarily see them in the context of their high school team games- they see them at the big AAU extravagazas where they see a lot of guys at one time. AAU is a crappy way to rank anybody- except for their athletic ability and their ability to show off. Recruiting rankings by all of these guys are suspect at best. Football, by it's nature is probably more accurate due to the fact that there really is no "alternative" measurement, but it is still a subjective exercise on the part of the ranker- who probably has his own built-in biases. The only thing that counts is the end game scoreboard and end of season records. Anyone who orgasms over their recruits before they play a game, needs to find themselves something more to occupy their time.

As to whether or not to opine. I'm not going back to repeat all of my past "credentials" or how much I have been involved with as far as my own kid athletes- who played hs football and volleyball at a high level and were recruited, other relative athletes who received Division 1 and 2 basketball schollys, or my own coaching past, but trust me on this. When it comes to the process of recruiting in all of it's aspects both nice and also ugly, I've seen plenty first hand.

Yeah, I think I can opine.

I just don't get off on college football like many others. I'll follow it, but will not sit in front of the TV 6 days a week for 12 hours at a time to watch every freaking televised game.

However, I will poke fun at Not-re Dame and that alleged school across town at any opportunity- and hope that they miserably fail. I also don't mind if Oh-ho-ho State and the Big Greased in general fall into an abyss either.
