Reds to open '11 campaign earlier than usual
Season begins at home March 31; Yankees visit in June
There is a huge twist to the 2011 Major League Baseball schedule, but one thing hasn't changed for the Reds -- they get to continue their tradition of starting the season at home. As the oldest professional franchise -- founded in 1869 -- Major League Baseball has regularly scheduled the Reds to open at home. They've done so with a few exceptions over the past century.
The 2011 Opening Day to the regular season will be on a Thursday next season -- March 31 vs. the Brewers at Great American Ball Park -- instead of the usual Monday. The change to move up the season's start date was made so the postseason could be moved up and no longer stretch into November.
After the opener, the Reds will have Friday, April 1, off, and their three game series with Milwaukee will continue on April 2-3.
Next season's Interleague schedule will pit the Reds almost exclusively against the American League East and will include a marquee home series vs. the Yankees.
The Blue Jays will arrive in Cincinnati first to play over the weekend of June 17-19. The Yankees will follow for three games from June 20-22. From June 24-29, the Reds will visit American League parks when they play three games each vs. the Orioles and Rays.
The Ohio Cup rivalry series vs. the Indians remains with a home-and-home matchup. The Reds visit Cleveland from May 20-22 and host the Indians July 1-3.
An unbalanced schedule will give the Reds the most games vs. their National League Central rivals. The Reds will host the Cardinals for the first time from May 13-15, followed by the Cubs from May 16-17.
All game times are still to be determined.
The Reds will make two West Coast trips, including June 9-15 at San Francisco and Los Angeles. The longest trip of the season is a 10-game, three-city run through Cleveland, Philadelphia and Atlanta from May 20-29. There are also two nine-game trips.
The 2011 regular season will conclude vs. the Mets Sept. 26-28 at Citi Field.
