Last night's game versus Hanover saw the Muskies kick to the Panthers to open the game. Hanover methodically work its way into Xavier territory before scoring on a 22 yd. pass. The Panthers converted on a PAT run to go up 8-0 with 12:35 to go in the first quarter. Jon Deters returned the Hanover kick to X's 39 yd. line and passes to Jon Deters and runs by Eric Mile (both juniors) moved the ball into Hanover territory. A 20 yd. Greenwood pass to Jon Deters moved the ball to Hanover's 24; and senior Dan Deters' 16 yd. reception of a tipped ball gave X a 1st and goal on the one. Miles ran for the TD and freshman kicker Matt Coffee cut the Hanover lead to 8-7 with 5:57 left in the first quarter.
The Muskies held on downs and took over on their own 29 yd. line after Miles' 14 yd. return. X was soon in Hanover territory after a 35 yd. Greenwood pass to junior tight end Scott McLouglin. The quarter ended with X on Hanover's 19 yd. line but a penalty and Greenwood sack left the Muskies facing a 3rd and 16 from the 27. On the next play, Greenwood connected with Jon Deters for a touchdown and with Coffee's kick, X led 14-8 with 1:41 left in the first half.
Pat Fagel recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and X had the ball at the 50 yd. line. However, Coffee had to punt for a touchback after the offense stalled. Junior DB Andrew Bodziony sacked the Hanover quarterback for a 5 yd. loss and senior LB Dave Pergolini nearly had an interception. Juniors Wyatt Link and James Tilton combined for a sack of the Hanover quarterback forcing a Hanover punt. The snap was over the punter's head and X had the ball on Hanover's 7 yd. line. A Muskie fumble squandored the drive on the Panthers' 6 yd. line. A Hanover run and a personal foul on the Muskies moved Hanover out of trouble to the 35 but with 6:13 left in the half, Pat Fagel intercept a Hanover pass near midfield.
The Xavier drive stalled and after a Muskie punt, the Panthers moved into X territory before scoring a 6yd. run. The two point conversion gave Hanover a 16-14 lead. Jon Deters returned the Hanover kick 15 yds. to the Xavier 43. Aided by a late hit on Greenwood, X set up with a first down on Hanover's 30 with 29 seconds left in the half. A face mask penalty gave Xavier the ball on Hanover's 15; and wth 2 seconds left to halftime, Greenwood found Jon Deters in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown, Coffee's kick was good and X led 21-16.
The third quarter saw X receive the kick and a 38 yd. Greenwood run gave X a first down at Hanover's 21. With 12:30 left in the quarter, Greenwood's pass to Dan Deters went for a 19 yard touchdown. Coffee's kick made it 28-16 in Xavier's favor. The quarter ended with that score.
In the 4th quarter, Xavier moved the ball to Hanover's 14 yd. line but Coffee's 24 yd. fg attempt was short. The Xavier defense led by grad student DL Jeff Dayton kept the Hanover offense in check for the most part during the remainder of the game but a 13 yd. Hanover pass for a TD cut the score to 28-22. Fagel's tackle at the one yd. line stopped the two point conversion. A late sack by junior Dl James Tilton basically closed any hopes for a Hanover come back.
Offensively, grad student QB Chris Grrenwood was 23 of 35 for 237 yds.. Jon Deters had two TD grabs in his 10 catch/111 yd. game. Cousin Dan Deters' three catches for 42 yds. included one TD; and Scott McLoughlin had seven catches for 66 yds.. Eric Miles had one touchdown with 15 carries for 63yds. while Greenwood gained 45 yds. on seven carries. Defensively, Pat Fagel recovered a fumble as well as recording an interception. Wyatt Link was in on 6 tackles and Jeff Dayton recorded seven tackles (including two sacks). Xavier recorded five total sacks including two involving James Tilton(one with Wyatt Link) and one by Andrew Bodziony.
The Muskie win gave coach Jim Carty a win in his debut as Xavier's new head coach. Next week, Xavier travels to Columbus to face Ohio State's club team which will be out to avenge last year's 20-14 loss at Withrow Stadium.
