Xavier Hosts Hanover this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at Walnut Hills High School and a bit of a preview:

This Sunday the Muskie gridders return to Victory Parkway for a football game for the first time since 1973. While the game will be played not too far from Corcoran Field where Xavier stadium once stood, it will be the first time that Walnut Hills High School will host a Xavier football game. Hanover's junior varsity will be out to avenge last year's loss to Xavier at Roger Bacon stadium; and the Muskies will be under the guidance of new head coach, Jim Carty who served for two years under former Coach Tom Powers who stepped down last winter for personal reasons.

Returning to assit coach Carty will be line coach Matt Voline and defensive back coach, Mike Workman. Joining his staff will be former players, Brett Hoyer ('10), Kevin Tierney ('10) and Brendan Banker (MBA', '09). There are several other coaches on the staff as well.

Offensively, the Muskies will be led by quarterback, Chris Greenwood, who as a MBA student, will be in his fourth year calling signals. Greenwood is fast approaching several Xavier passing records held by Hall of Famer, Carroll Williams (who set many records in the mid-sixties with fellow Xavier great and NFL player, Danny Abramowicz). Greenwood's targets this year include senior WR, Danny Deters and junior Wr, Jon Deters. The Deters' cousins both enjoyed excellent 2009 seasons and they give Greenwood two fleet and sure-handed receivers. Soph Nick Sexton returns to give the Muskies another talented target as does junior tight end Scott McCloughlin who at 6'3'' and 225 lbs,. gives the Muskies a big veteran receiver.

The offensive line is anchored by veteran senior center, Mike Morse. Junior Logan O'Sicky returns as does junior James Heinmiller both of whom played well in 2009. Senior C.J. Moreland returns at a running back position and he is a tough inside runner.

Defensively, Carty describes his players as really being able to "fly to the ball". The Muskies return many starters from last year's defense including senior DB Dave Pergolini, junior DB Eric Miles, junior DB Brandon Tucker, soph DB Andrew Bodziony, junior LB Wyatt Link, junior DB Pat Fagel and junior LB James Tilton.

The Muskies also return other experienced players and newcomers who all figure to contribute to this season's effort where the Muskies hope to avoid the injuries and depleted numbers that helped lead to a 5-4 campaign. Coach Carty and staff are excited about the upcomng schedule and they are very optimistic that Xavier can regain the form that led to Midwest Collegiate Club Football conference championships in 2007 and 2008.

Having observed Coach Carty during the past two years as an assistant coach, there is no doubt that the team is in very good hands. His passion for the game is obvious; his enthusiasm is contagious. He commands and earns the respect of each of his players. Expect exciting football and a team that will give 100% for all four quarters.

I appreciate that you're passionate about our club football team, but you don't REALLY think this is the same thing, do you?

GM:

The records are what they are. Just as the passing game is different today than it was in the sixties for all college football, comparisons are at best just comparisons. As a kid, I had Carroll Williams and Danny Abramowicz sign autographs for me at Schmidt Fieldhouse during a basketball game. Williams and Abramowicz were simply phenomenal college players who played at a different level. I consider myself lucky to have seen them play. (Not only could Williams throw the ball, he was also a very capable runner; and the Bengals' Jordan Shipley reminds me of Abramowicz: not the fastest guy but a receiver with great hands.)

That being said, I have watched Greenwood play for three years now and he is a very good quarterback who happens to have two very good receivers in Danny Deters and cousin Jon Deters (neither of whom played football in high school). In their own right, these three players form a passing threat that is fun to watch; and last year, Jon Deters made a one-handed touchdown reception at Roger Bacon that was as good as catch as I have seen on any level.

While I would be hard pressed to say that they are as good as Williams and ABramowicz; I am just thrilled that the Muskies have a football team. That I can discuss Williams and Abramowicz in this thread thrills me as much because of the memories evoked.
