So I saw in the sports section today that after all these years (2001) that they are renewing their rivalry with......Wright State.....it is a 3 year dela, 2 at UC and the middle game at Wright State.....Here is what gets me....UC has never lost to them and that they are 6 and 0 against Wright State....How the "bleepin" hell is this a renewing of a rivalry???? 6 "freaking" games does not make a freaking rivalry......I guess Mick is trying to once again phsych up his players and fans with what is coming....LOL

Chick Ludwig has been pushing this for years, and he wants to call it the Gem City Jam.

Wright State fans and players don't molest fruit.

I almost like the backhanded slap from UC to Dayton.

Wright St. is good enough for UC to play, but not Dayton.

Ouch.

I'm quite sure that the characterization of the match-up as a "rivalry" is based entirely on the proximity of the two campuses, rather than on any supposed parity between the programs.

You know, the more I think about this the more I think that this is really a risky move on Mick's part. Wright St. has been a more than capable team lately and could quite possibly beat the Bearcats. That would not bode well for Mick if that happens. Losing to more than one Ohio team per year might be enough to get him the axe.

Chick Ludwig has been pushing this for years, and he wants to call it the Gem City Jam.

It already happened like 7 times, and it was called the Gem City Jam. Neither school really cared, it was all sponsor driven. Smith Barney had alums from both schools running their local branches and they put up enough cash for the series to happen. When Smith Barney (or whatever they were called at the time) pulled their sponsorship, the game stopped making financial sense for both sides.

Neither side really wants the game, that's a fact. Wright State makes more $$$ selling a few games a year around the country than they would with the sellout UD fans would assure in the Nutter Center. UD would play WSU in a buy game (but WSU gets more elsewhere), and they aspire for better home and home series than the pretty good ones they have now in ODU, New Mexico, Seton Hall, Ole Miss and Creighton. Wright State would be a step down, not a step up. There would have to be a reason ($$$) to take that deal.

In the end it's about dollars. Find a sponsor again and both sides will sign a contract. Otherwise, neither is interested.

I may be wrong, but I thought I remember prior to the NIT game between UC and UD I heard that the two were going to play next season, or they were at least discussing it. I may be wrong though. But UC needs to do whatever they can to fill the schedule and not have it cost too much. If that means having to travel to the Nutt then I guess they are traveling to the Nutt.

UC is playing Dayton in one of those exempt tournaments where the championship game is already set. I think the game is downtown at the old Coliseum.

You're right about the coliseum, I am already planning on going to that game with the same group that I went to the NIT game with. That group was pretty evendly divided between UC and UD fans.

I think by exempted tourney in that sense its more like a round robin where all the matches are set in advance. I think they bring in 3 other schools, and play each school once. In the past I have referred to it as the Doormat Invitational or the Cupcake Classic. Except didn't one of those doormats manage to beat UC one year, or am I thinking of a UK game under Gillespie? They have traditionally played that series in the Shoe, I wonder why the move to the Coliseum. The NIT game in March drew so much interest I think I sat like 6 rows off the court.

Man, Cronin could lose to Wright State, Dayton, AND Xavier all in one season, and all at home. I think they schould consider shceduling Miami as well, I mean may as well round off the set of losing to all your local peers.

I thought I heard the manager of 5th/3rd arena was pricing some of those black drapes to close off the upper bowl so the place doesn't look half empty every night.

Oh wait this isn't a House of Smack thread, should I tone it down?

UD says no to Wright St.

I love the quote from WSU87 in the comments section:

"The University of Dayton was looking for a game. It wanted to begin a home-and-home series this season against a team in the top 150 of the Ratings Percentage Index."

'Nuff said - so much for all the excuses as WSU meets all the "conditions" UD sets (and continues to move constantly) - UD, just admit you don't want to chance losing to WSU and move on. And Coach Donlon and WSU Admin - no more - we don't need a game against another mid major to validate our program.
