I know this sounds pretty dry, but considering how many times I jump on the bandwagon about attention paid to women's sports, this is a pretty big deal, congrats to XU I hope the effort pays off.

A very good sign for the program. I just noticed it on Goxavier and was coming over here to post. I'm surprised that X doesn't include Women's tickets with Men's Season tickets? I know they give you a couple free, but perhaps some sort of package could be worked out?

It's a great achievement, but I am foggy on how its going to benefit the fans or the school. The article focuses on how schools that have been grant recipients generally increase their attendance. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around how a grant is going to put fans in chairs. Women's basketball is very affordable as it is now, and owing to the lack of significant group sales opportunties for men's games benefits from that.

I am just wondering why the attendence is so bad for the women... There were many schools ranked above Xavier for Women's Basketball which are not comparable with our success, including Dayton with many other A-10 teams barely behind us. Hopefully the run through the NCAA's will help next year since the whole team is virtually back. I just wish more Xavier fans would be XAVIER FANS and not just Xavier Men's Basketball fans. It's frusterating...

It's hard when it's just something your not all that interested in. I would rather watch the men in an open gym than the women in the national championship. I want X's teams to win everything, but I'm not that interested in any of the other sports on campus. It's not X's women's basketball most fans aren't interested in, it's womens basketball in general.

Think about it this way, if you hate country music do you go to a show just because it's a good singer? No. Regarless, you don't have any interest in country music.

I'm assuming that this is basically cash to help XU do additional marketing, I'm pretty sure that's what has helped the schools in the past. I believe the NCAA is showing schools that with extra effort, ash and creative thinking, more bodies will fill the seats. They had those fun things during halftime like the frisbee dog, mascot basketball etc, they also had those quickie contests during media timeouts.

I was involved a little back in my time with the team, with their marketing efforts. XU has always worked very very hard at adding things to the games to keep people interested. The hope was that if they came, show them good hoops and a good times, and they'll return. The tough part about Cincinnati is that there is so much competition. XU has to compete for fans sport dollars with the bengals, UC, hockey etc etc etc. It's also a battle for fans time.

Quality basketball year in and year out is one thing that will keep fans coming back. The marketing push they put on when K Mac joined the team had mixed results, I remember seeing some increase in attendance. I hope the marketing efforts continue at XU, i know the university is very strongly behind the womens team, and they have the desire to put the resources behind the team.

I totally understand what you're saying and it makes perfect sense. The hard thing for me is that I am a guy that only went to men's games for years... and I just decided to go to a few ladies games, got to know some players, and was hooked. Before that I would have never imagined myself a women's basketball fan. Just like you I would have rather watched the men workout. Obviously, I know that all people are different though...

Why do people think it should be up to the men to support the women's sports? If the women showed the same interest in women's sports as men do in men's sports both teams could draw 9000 fans. If my wife and daughter showed any interest in going to the Xavier girls games I would be glad to go with them, but, I'm just not interested enough to go on my own. I do follow them and wish them a lot of success though.

The game against Stanford, which was the only game I caught all year on TV, was quality.

Except for the last 30 seconds when the ladies couldn't make 2 wide open lay ups to go the Final Four.

You and I, cut from the same cloth "xu_fan". My daughter started it, she was interested in going to watch a the women in the NCAA back in the year they went to the elite 8. I got the tickets, but couldn't go because of work. It made her a fan, and led to her interest in basketball which has been a godsend for our entire family. I got to know a few players, saw their talent level and more importantly how they put themselves on the line for Xavier year after year.

To those who say, and I hear it all the time, that even women aren't interested in going to games. In general I think you'll find that women and girls are not the spectater types, at least not nearly as much as men. They tend to be "doers" more than viewers, while we men seem to be very happy to sit back and watch. The other thing is that our interest sometimes leads our wives and daughters. I am certain that if back when Alex started being interested, if I had been lukewarm about it her interest could very well have disappeared. I am very proud to have made the right choice.

We have all be indoctrinated over the years to believe that mens sport is it, that women are the "mid major" of the sexes. To all those staunch XU MBB fans who can't ever see paying the 5 bucks to see the women play at Cintas I'll ask why is it that you're a Xavier fan? I'm a fan because I am an alum, because I love the sport, and above all I love Xavier University. I support it, men, women, hoops, soccer, volleyball, whatever. Any opportunity to spread my love for Xavier by infecting someone else with the bug, I'll take. I am not a fan because the XU team is the best basketball out there, because honestly sometimes they are not. Truthfully, is watching a Xavier Fordham mens game the best besketball available?? If I was just going to be a fan of the best team, I guess I'd be rimming the butt holes of the ESPN jerkwads and calling myself a duke-boy.

After watching the women play in the tourney this past year on tv, my daughter asked if we could go to a game and watch them play this year.

It's a done deal and maybe HER interest will make me become a bigger fan of the women's game.

I'm looking forward to sharing the time with her watching the university and the game I love.

I just hope we don't have a repeat of the 2001-02 season. That was the followup to the first Elite 8 team and was a disastrous season. Winning is what will ultimately bring in the fans, but I'm glad that the NCAA thinks highly enough of Xavier to establish THIS program specifically as a women's hoops hotbed.

Anything could happen. But, remember what occurred before the 2001-02 season. XU ha lost everything but the back court. An all start trio, Levandusky, Taru and Phillips (all 3 drafted by the WNBA) graduated after that elite 8 season of 2000-01. That was 50 points per game, add to that Jenn Parr's 7 ppg and you can see how the following year could be a struggled. It was Retta, Amy and Kate Kreager that gave the team a little punch. Shavon Bell was a big factor too, not as consistent as the other three, but added alot of offense to the mix.

With that said, this years team, is marked by who is returning, not who left. With Amber, T, Kate, Special and Ty. That's five to the teams top six scorers and rebounders. that's over 55 ppg and almost 27 rpg.
Another top ten finish, along with what should very well be another sweet sixteen, should go a long long way in cementing XU womens hoops as a regular destination for cincinnati area sport fans.
