This should be a story on drudge.

I know someone from the area. Supposedly most of the church's membership were not happy with it. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't rebuilld it.

Big Butter Jesus is no more. Our only hope is that they rebuild him bigger and stronger... and with a lightning rod this time.

EDIT: They had this coming. I just found out that he was made of fiberglass, styrofoam and wood. I can't believe that a giant tinderbox like that lasted as long as it did.

The video of Big Butter Jesus burning is on YouTube. I suspect the intrawebs is going to have a field day with this one.

Once again, the Trader's World Horse's balls have returned to their rightful place as the most prominent landmark between Cincinnati and Dayton. As it should be.

I couldn't resist checking out the Daily Show web site to see if you could submit ideas. This would be a perfect video for a moment of zen.

Someone beat me to it.

I'm trying not to give in to my baser nature and revel a little in this. I'm sorry for the people that found inspiration in this statue. But it was an affront to aesthetics and defied a basic tenant of two majore religions. According to WXIX, though, the preacher has already said it will be back.

don't care if it rains or freezes
'Long as I got my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Through my trials and tribulations
And my travels through the nations
With my plastic Jesus I'll go far

Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
I'm afraid He'll have to go
His magnets ruin my radio
And if I have a wreck He'll leave a scar

Riding down a thoroughfare
With His nose up in the air
A wreck may be ahead, but He don't mind
Trouble coming He don't see
He just keeps His eye on me
And any other thing that lies behind

Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Though the sunshine on His back
Make Him peel, chip and crack
A little patching keeps Him up to par

When I'm in a traffic jam
He don't care if I say "damn"
I can let all my curses roll
Plastic Jesus doesn't hear
'Cause he has a plastic ear
The man who invented plastic saved my soul

Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Once His robe was snowy white
Now it isn't quite so bright
Stained by the smoke of my cigar

If I weave around at night
And policemen think I'm tight
They never find my bottle, though they ask
Plastic Jesus shelters me
For His head comes off, you see
He's hollow, and I use Him for a flask

Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Ride with me and have a dram
Of the blood of the Lamb
Plastic Jesus is a holy bar

nothing like some god on god violence.

Here is my issue, they say the statue cost $300,000. WTF, if a church has a mission of helping people and spreading the word of god, couldn't they do more of that by using $300,000 on mission trips, food pantries, and good deeds.

What was the rumor going around about the owner being involved in the drug trade? Something about smuggling drugs inside of horses and one of the horses died? Is that just some legend or something? Has anyone heard of that one?

Is the guy who fronts the church the same guy who owns the ranch on the other side of the hill?

I haven't heard that one but a preacher associated with the church was accused by her brother's heirs of stealing their inheritance and giving (part of) it to the church. I've also heard the usual accusation against megachurches that the preachers drive around in new BMWs.

Snipe - I was going to go the same direction, let's not talk about spending $300,000 on a statue, particularly once you see the Vatican and its museums as well as some of the great church art, and amount of gold/marble/etc in our churches. (Note: I have had the Vatican guided tour, it is very impressive to behold)

Though a 62' statue whose primary components were wood, styrofoam and fiberglass. Naw, that wasn't a major fire waiting for a time to happen. Wonder how that got past building code. I have no doubt it will be rebuilt, hopefully with more care taken in regards to fire safety. I mean that particular church without that statue would be like CIntas Center without Dartagnan out in front. Paris without the Eiffell Tower, Disneyland without the castle. New York City without the Statue of Liberty, etc.

I think it is comical that Hustler (almost directly across the street) was not hit by lightning, but a 400 lb butter statue of Jesus was.

And some people say God doesn't have a sense of humor.

I think it's time to upgrade to Heisman Jesus.

One thing to consider is that it may have cost $300,000 to build but it probably has brought in much more money because of it's uniqueness. I bet you the church receives donations from people who just stop by on their way up 75 because of the statue.

I can see David Spade as an insurance adjuster...

Insurance: “Mutual of Bethlehem”

Solid Rock Church: “We would like to file a damage claim on our Jesus”

Insurance: You policy doesn’t include a deity rider…”

Solid Rock Church: “This is the third time we’ve been denied on this claim”

Insurance: “Ironic”

Solid Rock Church: “How are we going to replace him”

Insurance: “Don’t you guys put him in a cave and wait a weekend?”

Some people might consider the large mosque outside of Toledo to be an eyesore too.

To me, that's what makes America great. You can be passionate about religion and fully express it.

That's something you can't really do in, say, Europe:

You would have loved the dude at my college campus that used to verbally harass students for alleged fornication and masturbation and quote Bible verses. After all, he was being passionate about his religion and fully expressing it.

One's religious views should not be subject to government sanction, but I reserve my right to call you a complete fricking idiot for spending $400,000 to put up a amateurish, embarrassing eyesore constructed of oily rags and kerosene. Or several million dollars to construct and advertise a "creation museum."

Kahns Krazy

I don't understand why the construction cost is an issue at all. It's all private money. If they want to build a giant statue of turds and spend $100 million on it, what do I care?

If they are a tax-exempt organization (and almost all churches are) there is at least some public / governmental interest in how they use their funds.

A statue of Jesus would qualify as being in furtherance of their exempt purpose. However, a giant statue of turds would probably not qualify under the IRS code.

Well, that's a long stretch. Technically, a valid point, but I doubt there would be any uproar if the Cathedral Basilica-Assumption or St. Peter in Chains spent 10 times that amount to rebuild after a lightning strike.

And frankly, I think the "uproar" is disingenuous and base and a clear manifestation that the last remaining socially acceptable prejudice is that of anti-Christian. I doubt folks would be so cavalier in their criticisms if a synagogue, mosque, or center for gay rights were rebuilding a statue.

coasterville95

Speaking of making America great and freedom of religion, one can also see a minaret and mosque just about 10 miles south on I-75 from Touchdown Jesus.

But yeah 300K wouldn't START to replace either of those two churches you mentioned.

Besides insurance is buying them a new statue, and supporters of the church are sending in money so that is money the church can use for its charitable mission they wouldn't have otherwise received.

Switzerland is being overrun by radical muslims. We don't know how good we have it that our immigrants are at least Christian and have a work ethic. Their immigrants are all Muslims and the overload the public dole and incite violence and call for Sharia law. Europe will be Eurabia before we know it. The leading name for new born boys in London in Mohamed. At some point the cuture war is purely a numbers game.

I know rhetorical hyperbole is a staple here, but still.....

Anti-Christian Uproar?

Could it be that a lot of "folks" , many if not most of them Christian of one sort or another, just think the appearance of the statue itself, or even what it apparently represents in schlocky Christian marketing, was (pick as many as apply) ugly, goofy, bad primitive/folk art? I've toured a fair share of the churches of America and western Europe, and both marveled at the beauty and wondered at the excessive cost at the same time. as well as threw up in my mouth over things like St Anthony's tongue displayed in a glass case.

Half of US citizens believe that the Christian Lord's Prayer and the X Commandments should be permitted if not mandatory in our public schools. The short distance from "the United States is built on Judeo-Christian principles" to funding private Christian and Catholic schools with taxpayer dollars is the shortest road in American culture today. Evolution is not going to be taught in Texas any more and intelligent design will be taught as "science" in public schools because Christians insist that it be so. Christians, esp those of a fundamental bent, are still by far the majority, and don't take any affront to Jesus, real or imagined, lightly in this country. There are plenty of "Folks" and web sites and politicians and radio preachers and commentators continuously reminding us all of the putative loss of Christian values. Cf "We're more popular than Jesus" blowback.

I'm trying to think of a center for gay rights, synagogue or mosque that has an equivalent statue, can ya help me out? I'm more than willing to spread the laughter around on a non-discriminatory basis, but I don't think synagogues and mosques "do" statues.
