Poll (http://www.spartantailgate.com/forums/msu-red-cedar-message-board/448196-next-msu-hoops-coach-10-cavs-edition.html)

I have no idea why.

Well, some of the posters seem to actually know something about him: "At Dayton, Gregory has successfully maintained Dayton's postion as the 4th best program in Ohio."

The others seem te be thinking of the UD teams from a different decade.

So what list is Dayton the 4th best program in Ohio? This one?

1. Xavier
2. Ohio State
t3. Wright St., Kent St., Cleveland St., Miami, OH.
4. Dayton
5. Cincinnati
6. Akron
7. Bowling Green
8. Toledo

That's an unbelievable poll. I'm trying to think of some explanation for those results but can't come up with anything.

Perhaps us X fans are too harsh at Gregory. Regardless, it seems like there's more than enough evidence to be concerned about Gregory's ability to develop players and his ability to in game coach.

It's weird...BG is the far and away leader in the poll, but only gets a few mentions in the actual thread.

I think BG is voting multiple times.

Could get interesting gentlemen (and gentle women). Rumors are that Izzo has spoken to his team and will announce Friday he is headed to Cleveland. Apparently waiting for his kids to finish up school this week.

Early speculation is that Gregory would be the top choice to replace... WOW

I read that too.

So does that prove that Lebron will stay in Cleveland? It seems like Izzo is itching to leave MSU. Every job opening, from Miss St. to Auburn to Oregon, he has showed some interest in. So who knows if his interest has anything to do with Lebron's decision.

prediction markets are from perfect, but most are betting that Lebron will leave:

I think both Nike and the NBA want him in a bigger market.

If I'm a Dayton fan, I'm not upset with the prospect of Gregory leaving. I may even lean toward wanting him to go.

It's probably too late for any of their 2010 players to jump ship, and UD has no one on-board for 2011. And just imagine what a decent in-game coach could do next year with players like Wright, Johnson and Staten.

The guy's been at UD for seven years, and has only had a winning record in the conference three times with a 5-13 overall record against XU.

As a Xavier fan, I'd honestly be sad to see him go.

Yes, I voted for him numerous times, trying to be the ONLY school to go to 4 Sweet Sixteens in a row.

You know how last year big time Xavier boosters were trying to come up with some money to try and make the Xavier job more lucrative for Sean Miller before he left for Arizona? Should Xavier fans help the Dayton fans in a similar scenario to help keep Gregory at UD?

Just saw on ESPN scroll, that MSU AD is ready to name a new HC if Izzo takes Cavs job. I would think that would mean BG would not be named, because that would be tampering...

Are there "tampering" rules in place for colleges, coaches? I thought it was just more out of respect. No one respects Dayton.

I stole this information from the Blackburn Review (quickly becoming one of my favorite sites). It's the A-10 regular season records for each team over the last five years...

1. Xavier 61-19
2. Temple 50-30
3. St. Louis 45-35
4. Rhode Island 45-35
5. UMass 43-37
6. George Washington 42-38
7. Charlotte 41-39
8. St. Joseph's 41-39
9. Richmond 41-39
10. Dayton 41-39
11. La Salle 34-46
12. Duquesne 30-50
13. Fordham 26-54
14. St. Bonaventure 21-59

Just goes to show how incredibly unimpressive Gregory has been at UD.

Please stay, Brian.

I'm sorry but I just don't get it. Any bias aside - isn't MSU one of the most respected teams in the country and you want who? - Brian Gregory? Are you kidding me? Your telling me thats the best they can get? I think I'd rather have a year with an interom coach than take him.

I don't get it either. Michigan State has one of the highest profiles in the nation, and they want Gregory? Gregory?

I can name 6 other coaches easy that are more accomplished and a better fit at MSU than the midget. It makes absolutely and utterly no sense. His resume' sucks in comparison to the level that MSU is at. It would be a complete disaster for MSU, they just don't know it.

I HATE dayton.

MSU AD probably referring to Izzo's Assistant Head Coach. Much like the succession that goes on at X. I have always been a Tom Izzo fan and as a Cavs fan it would be interesting to see how he does there. However, as an X fan and having experienced the angst of this kind of situation several times, I feel for MSU fans.

Rumor of a 4pm presser today at MSU (surely they'd give Izzo a send off conference like we did $). Izzo apparently cancelled golf with MSU football coaches this morning...

Quick someone deploy Thor to the Gregory compound.

Dayton fans already preparing for Adreian Payne

"What if Izzo goes to the Cavs and Adrian Payne jumps ship due to coaching change and lands at UD?"

"Who knows, maybe this turns out to be better than we expected."

"The ESPN site claims that rumors are running wild that a number of BB players will consider leaving if Izzo departs Lansing.
Question: If, A. Payne (or anyone else) decides to leave and consider UD, what are the options available to him? Do we have space for him since Berry's departure or does Kevin Dillard fulfill that scholarship?"

Not to sidetrack this thread too much, but I don't understand why LBJ would come back to the Cavs to play for a college coach anyway. If anything I think that would push him out the door.

As far as BG going to MSU to replace Izzo, I don't quite understand that one either. Really what has BG done at UD that would warrant being hired at a Big Ten program like MSU? I don't care if he was a former Izzo disciple. If I'm a Spartans fan and my school is looking outside for a head coach, as opposed to promoting an assistant, I'd want one that has had consistent success and many tournament appearances with whatever school the guy has been with.

Fans of many programs worry about keeping it "In the Family". They disregard actual results (W/L) and look for guys who "Know the system" and "fit the mold" of their old coach, not realizing that the succeeding coach might just fill the shoes the of the legend.

I hope Gregory stays at UD, and continues to underdevelop players and underwhelm expectations. Not to mention teach his players how to "box".

How poetic was the boxing thing and the pansy punch at Holloway? Seriously you can't make this stuff up! Bless your (really) little heart Brian Gregory.

My husband said the same thing and I think it comes down to the fact that the Cavs are getting desperate. We all know that a successful college coach does not translate to a successful NBA coach, however, every great once in awhile it does happen. My guess is that the Cavs want to make a bold move to prove to James that they are willing to takes chances to win - whether it works or not remains to be seen.

Read in the Enquirer this morning Izzo's supposed to decide today. Not sure whether that's true, but the popular opinion is that he's gone.

Though Izzo leaving would really help Xavier in its recruitment of 2012 star Gary Harris, I want to minimize any possibility of Gregory leaving Dayton.

Anyone think MSU would/could make a run at Brad Stevens?

xufan02
06-12-2010, 10:44 AM
I think MSU is going to keep it in the family. The top 3 candidates will be current associate head coach Mark Montgomery, Tom Crean, and Brian Gregory. I think that Mark Montgomery would be the frontrunner; he has been the associate head coach for 9 years, and recruited a good portion of the active roster. Tom Crean is still trying to get IU back to being competitive, and people have their doubts about him. BG is a very good recruiter, but his teams tank the second half of the regular season every year, and their overall record in the A-10 is almost at .500. Do you really think he will be able to get through the Big10 conference any better.

I would imagine if Izzo did leave and A. Payne wanted out, Xavier would go after him very hard. Our biggest question mark going into next season in my opinion is our frontcourt. Payne might not be the complete answer, but getting a talent like him this late in the game would be HUGE. We have a scholarship with Walsh leaving; we would be positioned well if Izzo bolts and Payne wants out.

Yep. I think this points to LeBron leaving Cleveland or at least not committing to Cleveland right now (not a surprise at this point). As a Knicks fan hoping to sign LeBron I would have been worried if Tom Izzo was hired. Tom Izzo was not going to sign on in Cleveland unless he was relatively confident LBJ was coming back.
