SOUTHERN ILLINOIS’ DILLARD HEADING TO DAYTON

Southern Illinois point guard Kevin Dillard has, according to sources, chosen to play at Dayton.

The 6-foot Dillard averaged 12.3 points and 5 assists this past season for Chris Lowery and the Salukis.

Dillard had narrowed his choices down to Dayton and Alabama – but a source told FOXSports.com that the Crimson Tide opted to go in a different direction on Sunday and Dillard then chose Dayton.

I like how the Tide went a different direction and Dillard "chose" Dayton.

Good luck to the kid.

Isn't Dillard the guy who originally wanted to transfer to Xavier?

We have a lot in common.

Dillard like me, really wanted to play for Xavier.

Dillard, like me, will never get to play for Xavier.

Dillard, like me, will also never play in the NCAA tournament.

Dillard is a good pick up for Dayton.

Dillard is a good pick up for Dayton.

Oh, agreed. He'll be a good addition to a backcourt of Staten, Spearman and Paul Williams (can't remember the other guards Dayton has).

I think Dillard was rumored as transferring to about five places before ultimately setting on UD. But he'll contribute there.

It's sort of odd that they would go after him with Staten coming in. Maybe he's more of a combo. Or maybe with the experience of the past few years, Gregory feels like you can't have enough pg's.

Neither can Brian Gregory, which is why he subs them in and out all the time.

Gregory: "Who's in now? Is that Lowry or Warren? Can't tell they both have those lovely dreads."

Ha, seriously, that would be my worry with this pick up if I a UD fan. Staten sounds like he will be great, but now Gregory has an opportunity not to play him in a couple years.

"The Tide opted tp go in a different direction on Sunday and Dilliard then chose udump ."

Sounds an awful lot like the Cryers are "sloppy seconds."

Quite the ringing endorsement.

BTW . Southern Illinois lost 15 games last year. Yep. The dump only picks winners.

Great get for the humper faithful. Dayton is going to be awesome.

In reading up about Dillard a while back, it sounds as if he has a little bit of baggage. Apparently there were two guys who stirred the pot a bit and he was one of them. It may have been because they were losing.

SIU fans did not wish him to go because he was very good but at the same time weren't unhappy because he stirred the pot a bit.

Dilliard is a good get for them no doubt.

However, in his junior year he will have to deal with senior Terrell Holloway and his senior year he will have to deal with fellow senior Mark Lyons. Advantage Xavier.

And if Dee Davis is any good...look out!

So either he's backing up Juwan Staten, or Juwan Staten (UD's biggest recruit) would be a bust. Not really a win-win...

Now that's funny.

Has he been avoiding the barber shop since his decision?

Just another piece of the puzzle for their back to back (to back?) pre season championships...

Meanwhile, X will continue to produce actual championship seasons.

LOWERY AND SALUKIS GOING OLD-SCHOOL

It was one of those recruiting classes that mid-major coaches dream about.

Two years ago, Southern Illinois coach Chris Lowery brought in a four-man recruiting class that was supposed to not only keep the Salukis in the national spotlight, but actually take SIU to an even higher level.

There was talented big man Anthony Booker, a consensus Top 100 player who was supposed to make those in Carbondale quickly forget about Randal Falker.

Then there was Kevin Dillard, the Chicago point guard who had a chance to be better than Jamaal Tatum and Bryan Mullins.

And there were also guards Torres Roundtree and Ryan Hare.

Two years later, all four are history.

Yet Lowery isn’t shedding a tear.

The Southern Illinois coach, who went to the NCAA tournament each of his first three seasons at the helm and averaged 24 victories per year over his first four years, is going old-school.

``When you get to a certain level, everyone wants you to recruit a certain kind of kid,” Lowery said. ``We did that and it didn’t work.”

That kind of sounds like a cop-out.

That kind of sounds like a cop-out.

Also indicates that it isn't easy getting a bunch of really good players to become a team. All the more evidence as to what a superb job CMack did last year to get people to meld into a cohesive group.

Southern Illinois guard moving to UD

Former Illinois Mr. Basketball Kevin Dillard led Missouri Valley Conference
in assists last season as a sophomore

Kevin Dillard is transferring from Southern Illinois to the University of Dayton because he thinks he can better himself as a basketball player.

The move also might end up elevating the games of his future Flyers teammates.

“I’m very versatile. I’m willing to do anything for the team,” he said. “I think I can get people open shots, and that’s what I like to do most.”

The 6-foot combo guard, who was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2008 after a standout season at Homewood-Flossmoor High School near Chicago, had numerous offers after deciding to transfer. He ended up picking UD over Alabama.

Dillard, who will sit out this season and have two years of eligibility remaining, led the Missouri Valley Conference in assists as a sophomore last season at 5.0 per game and averaged a team-high 12.3 points. He was the MVC freshman of the year in 2008-09.

Brian Stinnette, a recruiting analyst for ChicagoHoops.com, said he’s known Dillard since middle school and called him “a good kid” and “tremendous ‘get’ for Dayton.”

He added: “He’s an absolutely perfect fit for Dayton. Offensively, when you give a kid with his ability a chance to play the way Dayton plays, he’s going to create points for himself and points for other players. He truly is a kid who makes others around him better.”

Dillard committed to SIU after his junior year of high school — “I sort of made my decision overnight; maybe that’s one of the reasons why it didn’t work out,” he said — but was more diligent about sifting through schools before relocating. He also considered Boston College, Baylor and Nebraska.

What struck Dillard during a visit to UD last week was the chemistry among the players and the bond he developed with the coaches.

“That’s the best coaching staff I’ve ever come in contact with,” he said. “They communicate well, and everybody is on the same page and has one goal (NIT....LOLZ!!!).

“That’s what sealed the deal.”
