The net is getting active about the possibility of ND announcing Brey's resignation.

Apparently, a fling with a reporter has triggered his conduct/morality clause. Announcement may come tomorrow.

IF this is true, it's going to add to an already interesting off season.

Gregory or Stevens to ND?

I couldn't find anything via google news.

Brey has been solid but not spectacular at ND. He's been there a while. He doesn't recruit great. He's shown that his teams have a consistent ceiling (2nd round NCAA tourney).

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of alums wouldn't mind seeing a new coach.

With all that cash, how does ND still play in that dungeon?

Maybe Matt Doherty will go back.

I'd put Dunphy in the mix as well.

There have been rumors going around South Bend all season that he had been having an affair with a woman working for WNDU, a local news station. The woman's contract was nearing its end and not being renewed. Brey leaving could easily end up being beneficial for the Irish, especially with the remodeled facilities out there.

If this happens, I would have to think Brian Gregory would be a candidate and he'd be a moron not to take it.

I never thought he was that great of a coach but every few years he seemed to do well with the team when it wasn't expected. I believe he has actually won big east coach of the year twice. I know he won at least once. At the same tim it seems when his teams are expected to do well they underachieve.

I'm still not sure what Gregory has accomplished to garner any interest whatsoever.

I'm with you about that, but the pickings are thin out there as compared to other years.

Brey has massively underachieved with 4 years of an All-American (Luke Harangody).

Every year, but 2009, they played a joke of a non-conference schedule, made themselves into paper tigers, then folded in the Big East and NCAA tournament. Or got relegated to the NIT.

If ND cared at all about basketball, he'd be gone.

yeah, he's definitely not a bad coach. He's Coach K's most successful assistant (but, that's not a great honor).

It's interesting you brought up conference coach of the year. It seems like coaches who recruit well never seem to win it. The honor tends to go to teams that play a slow, cerebral style with average talent.

Bo Ryan, likewise, receives a lot of praise by the media. And, of course, in contrast most people think Calipari is a hack.

It's sort of ridiculous. Coaches are responsible for recruiting. Brey has done an average job at recruiting and that should damage his reputation as a coach (and I get sick of the non-stop praise Bo Ryan receives).

_I_ think he's a slimy cheater, not a hack. There's 0 chance he knew nothing about Derrick Rose. Or in the incredibly unlikely chance that he did, he set up his organization such that he was deliberately shielded from it. Either way, in my mind, it all falls on his head, or the spot where his head should have been but wasn't.

Agree with you about knocking Brey on either recruiting or player development, or whatever reason he couldn't do anything with Luke Harangody.

yes, Calipari is definitely a cheater. But he's an effective one.

Harangody wasn't a highly rated recruit. So Brey got lucky by landing such a good player. But his team still underachieved. I can see why a lot of ND fans want him gone.

Calipari's cheating will continue to escalate as he desperately tries to reach a final four.

Has he ever made a final four that wasn't stripped?

False alarm.

According to an 'informed source/poster' on NDNation, Brey isn't going anywhere, and that source added, "and that comes straight from the lips of a senior athletic department official right into my little ears yesterday."

It would have made it interesting for the UD fan base had it happened, as Gregory has a no-penalty out clause for Michigan State and ND.

i agree with the first statement, and because of that, i don't think ud would have had any reason to be alarmed.

i don't think gregory is a poor coach. i just don't think he's anything special. i don't think mike brey has a particularly outstanding resume either, but i feel he's better than gregory. not great, but good enough and better than any current realistic alternative.

I do not think Mike Brey is a great coach and simply does not know how to teach defense. But I don't like the argument that he "couldn't even win with an All-American." Harangody was a great individual player, but he was selfish and in no way helped make those around him better. Luke Harangody was a great player for Luke Harangody, but he was never a very good player for a team. I used to live with a big ND fan and watched more than my fair share of Irish games, and I always came away with the same impression. Notre Dame could be really good if someone taught them how to play defense and the more Luke Harangody is doing himself, the less the rest of the team is doing. I'm not sure ND would be that much better off with Brey leaving, but I also don't think their fans would be crying for too long.

The goat shot nearly 25 shots a game and made less then half of those shots. That is horrible in many ways for a big man and for his team. It is not a coincidence that ND got better after he was injured. He may be the most overrated college player of all time.

I'm not sure about that. I heard many people call London Warren an average PG and that is definitely overrating him!

Wow, that chick has some beak. When she turns sideways, it almost blocks the entire back-set!

Sarah Jessica Horseface would be proud.
