Charlote has hired Alan Major (OSU asst and former XU asst under Matta). Keeps Kelsey safely at X for now... Good news!

Yet another XU guy in an A-10 coaching or AD position.
Love it.

Whew. I don't think we'll keep Kelsey all that long, but I wanted to be longer than a year.

Kelsey is not long for this program, that's for sure but I'm glad to have him around for at least another season. I want to squeeze as many recruiting classes out of him as we possibly can.

so what do you guys think of Major? There isn't much info out there on him. Seems to be a pretty good recruiter based on his past recruits, but OSU hasn't updated his bio since 2007 and OSU fans don't seem to be discussing him at all.

And Lionel Chalmers had to bail Beaknose out of a 10-9 start, huh?
Actually, CMack didn't come back until the Raccoon was hired as head coach.

Matta's assistants were Miller, Major, and Groce. Miller hired Mack when he was promoted.

Yeah, I see that he did not come over until '04 now. Still pretty solid.

Nope. That was under Skip. He came back in the 2004 offseason under Raccoon.

Bill Comar was Matta's Director of Basketball Operations, and he was Miller's for the first couple of years too

Don't read too much into that. OSU is a football school and it seems most "fans" don't give a crap about the basketball program unless they think there's a shot at a National Championship. And even then, they only seem to get into around the tourney.
Major is a solid hire. He's not as good as Kelsey, but...

Mack was Director of Basketball Ops, was he not?
No. Mario Mercurio was Director of Basketball Operations under Matta. When Sean took over as Head Coach Mario went into a new role as Director of Administration and they hired a new Director of Basketball Operations. Mack returned to Xavier as Associate Head Coach under Miller. Mack was Director of Basketball Operations at Xavier under Prosser.

Mario was never DBO. DBO was Bill Comar under Matta and Miller until he left for an assistants job and then Travis Steele became DBO.

I wouldn't get too excited just yet. By all accounts he was their top choice. If he didn't get the job, I have to assume he took his name out of the running. Now that could be because (i) he doesn't want to leave Cincy at all; (ii) he wants to stick around for at least another year with hopes of a better gig; or (iii) he's already in the running for better gigs. I have no idea. Does anyone?
I would add that as far as I'm concerned, this is akin to Jordan leaving early. He's an assistant coach (and a former classmate). If he gets a HC job, I say good for him and will wish him all the success in the world EXCEPT for any games against us.

One could say that Matta had good assistants. One could also say that Matta is a very good coach and is a great coach to be an assistant to. I would argue both.
But one trait of a good coach is that his assistants get head coaching jobs.

Look I like Pat and am glad he is a part of the program but since when did he become the best thing since sliced bread?

Since he out-recruited sliced bread.

I see what you're saying. I think the main reason I'm glad he's staying is simply for continuity. Pat is know as one of the best assistanct coaches in the country (for multiple reasons), and it certainly is a plus to have in on Xaviers bench.

I know that Kelsey won't be here for long but I am glad he is staying for a few years. Besides him, the staff is a little short on experience and its nice that he can stay and help teach Steele, Bino and Brian some things before he departs. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he is pulling in some good recruits.

If you ever talk to Pat you'll truely understand. The passion he has for Xavier and Basketball is only too obvious. That coupled with his knowledge of the in's and out's of the game and all of his Prosser-isms make him much better than sliced bread.
For example, last time I was able to talk to him he had his usually raspy voice due to his constantly yelling, when I asked about it he said, "Skip would always refer to it as aggressive counseling".

Well he has to be pretty good with how Skip took him on and then when Mack was promoted he immediately went after him. I've heard he's great with the players also and wasn't he mentioned last year for a couple of HC vacancies at some of the smaller conferences. Heck I remember him on the bench, as a player, coaching his teammates. My opinion is that some of the best coaches are the ones who sat the most time on the bench. They had plenty of time to learn the game from that angle.

Good point,
I can't believe we are sitting here being excited that we kept our #1 recruiter who is already helping Mack secure the best class ever at X in his first season.
Silly us.

I had a math class with Pat back at Xavier.
He had the talent to out recruit everyone back then. You could see it the way he came to class and sat there. You knew he'd be something special.

...Why? cause he could pull chicks? That's the only kind of "recruiting" college students care about.

Kelsey is a "tireless" recruiter. He is truly a special coach.
If he pulls in Jakarr Sampson as well as already having pulled in Dez Wells look out.
