I believe he did not want to be part of a team that couldn't even make a field of 96

I hate to actually agree with Guy in this instance, but another year with Mick as coach was not going to do anything for Lance's draft status. He is much better off leaving now rather than let Mick ruin his stock any further.

Significant statement from ZagsBlog article...
NBA scout....
Today in the NBA,
50 percent of it is scouting and
50 percent of it is background check to find out what kind of person he is.

I'm not suprised at all. I think he'll pull his name out though. From what I read, his game could use a lot of pollish. Of course, is Mick the guy to get him to where he needs to go? I for one doubt it.

Wow. Horrible decision but it's nice to see that he is going to try to support his young daughter. Too bad they will have to move to Europe for this to happen.

According to the article that was linked, Stephenson pulled out of classes at uc. I don't see how he could pull his name out of the draft and return to uc if he is no longer taking classes there. I would think he would be academically ineligible at that point.

OH! I didn't read the article. Wow! Well it's his life. I hope it works out for him.

I agree on some levels that he doesn't appear ready, but is he going to get better next year under Cronin? Is there any real benefit to coming back to that trainwreck of a basketball team? Is he going to truly have a chance to showcase his talent?
Couple that with the upcoming labor issues in the NBA and I don't necessarily disagree with this decision. I was surprised he was going to come back.
If UC had a better team I would probably feel much differently about his choice, but they don't.

We will see if "Born Ready" can handle the "Real World". He can't turn back now if he's not attending UC anymore. He must have some interesting handlers around him.

Yeah, that's his big mistake. I can see skipping classes if their is a camp/combine/tryout type event you need to attend to further your career, but withdrawing from the university before you have a solid contract with a team? That's crazy. That's like buying a $400M Mega Millions ticket and quitting work before the drawing just because you feel lucky. Okay, the potential NBA player probably has much better odds than mega millions.
That's like quitting your current job offer because a friend of a friend has a job opening, and then having said new job offer fall through.
This is an unusual time, granted, with the stormy sky ahead next summer for the NBA, but to not take full advantage of a free college education. What's the worst that could happen? You make it in the NBA and you have knowledge in another career path?
I can't imagine the NCAA looks favorably upon a 'student-athlete' withdrawing from the school the day after the season ends.

Keep in mind that UC is on a quarter system - I'm not sure when the spring quarter started. Did he just pull out of classes, or did he not enroll in classes for spring?

I think the spring quarter started a a week or two ago.
It's been made known that Stephenson will hire an agent, which would give him no chance of coming back.
