"Rob Loe, a highly sought 7-foot center from New Zealand, reportedly has given SLU an oral commitment. It's a major recruiting win for the Billikens, who beat out Arizona, Pittsburgh and Colorado for Loe. He played for New Zealand at the world junior championships last summer, the same tournament that teammates Christian Salecich and Cody Ellis were in, and earned a spot with the full national team, the youngest player ever to do so. He's scheduled to play for the world team at the Nike Hoop"

Hmmmm. The broken down Lexus in the desert missed out on another one. Yep, people will just flock out there because of it's "greatness."

I guess Book can control New Y, but not New Z.

No, but I think Majerus has firm control of the South Pacific market though.

He obviously could tell the food in America was decent when Rick came to recruit him. That had to be a selling point.

Saint Louis = Saint Mary's East insomuch as they have a boatload of players from the Aussie area.

Maybe he saw Majerus and thought he would be playing for a famous New Zealander...Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings Fame)

You're not kidding. It seems like 1/2 of that team is from Australia / New Zealand. Does SLU event recruit domestically anymore or are they strictly international?

Randy Bennett at St. Mary's might disagree. They have five Australians on their team currently.

Yeah I forgot about St. Mary's. Hasn't Majerus always seemed to recruit foreign players? I thought he had a few at Utah. Was Bogut one of his players or was Majerus gone by then? I can't remember. I think that Finnish kid, Hanno Mottola, played for him though.

Rusty: I wonder if these guys know the Commodores.
Guy on street: You gonna go all the way down about half a block and you'll see a Torino with no wheels on it. Now inside that Torino is my cousin Jack, now you tell him you're my boy and you're lost and he'll make sure you get to where your goin cause you don't want to know from me man, this ain't even my neighborhood.

A hijacking that you knowingly started!

Now, how about the SLU recruit?!?

Ah, who cares. I started the whole thread. I can hijack the bastard too. What the hell else can you say about a 7 foot New Zealander except that he turned down a chance to play in the arid wasteland of the Southwest?

I was hoping he was Gheorghe Muresan ugly, but no such luck.

Nice get for SLU. Being able to get top foreign talent can be a good thing. Majerus has always been able to do that. Mixing that with quality domestic players that are usually diamonds in the rough has been good for Majerus.

I wonder how recruiting these overseas guys works. It seems like it would be very expensive. I assume that you would make far fewer recruiting visits than coaches typically do for domestic recruits. Still, a plane ticket to Australia costs a fair amount of money, much less 2 plane tickets like Majerus would require (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Seriously, though. I wonder how different it really is recruiting foreign players. Perhaps that is a reason why many schools don't do it a whole lot even though there seem to be some pretty good players out there.

Take a look at what Saint Mary's did with, what, 5 Aussies on the roster? I suspect a lot of it is building the pipeline, so by the time you visit, you know you're seeing the real thing.
