Here is a list of early entries who have already declared for the draft. I figured it would be helpful with all the bantering on whether or not Nickels should leave. Here is the competition (so far):

Name / School / Class / Position
James Anderson / Oklahoma St. / Junior / Guard
Cole Aldrich / Kansas / Junior / Center
Craig Brackins / Iowa State / Junior / Forward
Derrick Caracter / UTEP / Junior / Forward
Charles Garcia / Seattle / Junior / Forward
Paul George / Fresno State / Sophomore / Forward
Manny Harris / Michigan / Junior / Guard
Dominique Jones / South Florida / Junior / Guard
Sylvan Landesberg / Virginia / Sophomore / Guard
Tommy Mason-Griffin / Oklahoma / Freshman / Guard
Herb Pope / Seton Hall / Sophomore / Forward
Jeff Robinson / Seton Hall / Sophomore / Forward
Hassan Whiteside / Marshall / Freshman / Center
Jahmar Young / New Mexico State / Junior / Guard

My observations: Manny Harris seemed to be a hotter name last year around this time than this year. Oklahoma had a rough year. If they lose Mason-Griffin I expect they will be down again next year. I didn't watch any Seton Hall basketball, but two kids declaring early from that school? Really? No one from Kentucky has declared yet. I expect them to declare as a team, "We have all decided to enter the NBA draft..."

I'm always amazed by the guys, both football and basketball, who leave early and either 1) don't get drafted or 2) in football, go in the 6th or 7th round.

Landesberg had no choice. I would be surprised if Caracter ever bothered to go to a class at UTEP.

Hopefully they take Calipari with them...and still don't win.

Jeremy Hazell, Jr., Seton Hall- G
Malcolm Delaney, Jr., Virginia Tech- G
Kenneth Faried, Jr., Morehead State- C
LaceDarius Dunn, Jr., Baylor- G

None will sign an agent right now. Dunn likely looking to just see what scouts have to say and then return to Baylor.

Per Lexington H-L....

Father says Orton will test NBA waters

Kentucky reserve big man Daniel Orton will enter the NBA Draft, his father Larry said on Wednesday. His son will not hire an agent so he can retain the option of returning to UK next season, the elder Orton said.

Orton is expected to be one of several UK players entering the draft. Others expected to enter include fellow freshmen John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, plus junior forward Patrick Patterson.

According to NCAA rules, underclassmen have until May 8 to withdraw from the NBA Draft and retain their college eligibility.

Per Wiki....

2010 Early Entry rules....

A player who is not automatically eligible must declare his eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft.

For the 2010 draft, this date will fall on April 25***.

The basic requirements for automatic eligibility are completion of college eligibility for U.S. players, and reaching age 19 no later than December 31 of the calendar year of the draft for international players. A more complete discussion of the rules for automatic draft eligibility is available in the "Eligibility" article.

A player who has hired an agent will forfeit his remaining college eligibility, regardless of whether he is drafted. Also, while the CBA allows a player to withdraw from the draft twice, the NCAA mandates that a player who has declared twice loses his college eligibility.

Under NCAA rules that take effect with this draft, they will only have until May 8*** to withdraw from the draft and maintain their college eligibility.

Previously, players who declared for the draft could withdraw as late as 10 days before the draft (the withdrawal deadline under the CBA) and still maintain college eligibility.

Why the NCAA would limit a student athletes ability to make a smart and informed decision about possibly remaining a student athlete is beyond my grasp. Really? Really?

Gary Parrish RT @DraftExpress: D Cousins in Columbus. Apparently saying D Dodson is declaring for draft & that Cal told him only 4 UK players returning.

If I read this tweet correctly, I guess Darnell Dodson is going pro as well and UK will only have 4 players returning. I guess those are the problems of one and dones.

Hopefully we hear something from Jordan in the next couple days. Supposedly going to be talking with his brother shortly.

Not very surprising but Aminu from Wake Forest will enter.

The draft is just one of many things about the NCAA I will never understand. The same organization allows baseball players to get drafted without impunity. Why isn't it the same for basketball? No one has to declare anything in baseball. Sheesh, if a kid doesn't get drafted, he should have the right to continue his education. Declaring should be merely a function of a kid saying, "If you draft me, I will sign." Nothing more. Nothing less. In baseball, they drafted dozens of rounds. If one kid doesn't sign, it is no biggie. In basketball, you would like some guarantee that you can sign the kid if you draft him.

Well, in baseball you also have to make a choice: (A) go pro out of high school; (B) go to Junior College; or (C) go to college for at least three years.

I'd love it if basketball was the same as baseball in this regard.

I can't imagine Darnell Dodson or Daniel Orton getting staying in the draft. No way will they be a top pick by any means.

Everything I have seen has Orton as a lottery pick or close to. Dodson makes no sense at all. Quite frankly I hope they all go pro so it screws Calipari.

Edit: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20100401/SPORTS03/4010352/1002/sports/Kentucky+basketball+coach+John+Calipari+prepared+f or+mass+exodus++Wall+says+decision+to+go+pro+not+m ade

I guess Dodson wants to transfer, not go pro. That is a lot more logical.
