I say. Everytime we think we are starting to build a lead they start to put on the three point shooting clinic. Defense has been left out in the parking lot. High scoring game, crazy buzzer beater three by Xavier to end the half up 5. 50-45 halftime score.

Dud I mention free papa johns pizza on way into arena?

Not impressed with McGuff as a coach. This team is much better than this.

I'm tired of this program doing this in the tournament. This a 3 vs. 14. We should have been in cruise control up 20 by now. Instead we have a 2 possession game.

I honestly don't know how you don't sit down McGuff after this and ask him what he does differently from the end of the season to the first NCAA games year after year.

Why does McGuff let these girls keep firing up these threes when they can get two under the basket any time they want it.

If you were to tell me Ta'shia had 22 points 18 rebounds (12 offensive), Amber had 27 points 6 rebounds, and that XU was outrebounding a team at home 42-26 and only be up 5, I'd tell you you're crazy...

Bingo, great recruiter - not a great bench coach. I've said this for years, so it's separate from today's action. Hope the ladies can finish this off.

We lose this game and I will never go to another game while he is coach. This is our Final Four season. If we lose to a team where I don't even know what conference they are from, I am done.

To Xaviers credit ETSU was hitting every 3 pointer in the first half. I know that they were open on some of them, but on many they had a hand in their face and still made the shot. It was an incredible display of 3 point shooting.

Also, Tyeasha Moss and Katie could not make wide open threes, which they would normally make. Now, like many of you at the game I was getting so mad at Kevin McGuff, but after thinking about it he cannot control whether the girls make wide open shots, and Moss in particular was wide open almost every possession. They werent even guarding her. My only complaint is that he didn't sub Katie or Dee Dee in to see if they could make a shot.

Oh Well. A win is a win and Amber and Ta'Shia played incredible. Now lets take out Vandy!

On a side note: Xaviers weakness if def quickness with our guards because Katie and Moss arent the quickest guards in the world. Xavier has struggled against teams that have really quick guards all year and ETSU def had that. Vandy should be a much different story. ETSU was getting so many semi-open looks is because Xavier had to respect their driving ability and therefore couldn't really be up in their face.

First NCAA win since 2001 and I'm the bandwagon fan?

Fact is that if McGuff lost that game winning A10 championships isn't enough. Unless you would prefer to aspire to the same dreams as Dayton.

You obviously dont pay attention to NCAA tourney games. There are no givens. That's why they make them play instead of automatically advancing the higher seeds. Just ask Wisconsin, Kansas, Gtown, Vandy, Villanova, Temple, Marquette, among others. And dont give me the Women's is different bull crap. Btw, if you are so tired of it, dont go. You obviously didn't today. I always love how all the experts like to come out of the woodwork and lay out to everyone what the team should be doing when the margin of victory is not to their perceived satisfaction.

Katie looks like she has run out of gas. She hasn't looked good in quite a while. Dee Dee really can't shoot. Moss was the best option, and unfortunately, they weren't going down.

Also, I was at the game and I want to say that ETSU got extremely lucky hitting all of those 3's. If they make just half of the ones they made, they are going home with a 30 point loss. They could not stop Amber or Ta'Shia at all. Both did pretty much what they wanted and ETSU had no answer.

I've been critical of McGuff at times, but I have a hard time putting this on him.

On a sad side note, early indications are that Tyesha Moss may have suffered an ACL injury to her left knee late in the game when she collapsed at the basket in a lay up attempt in the final minute. That will be a big blow to them. Prayers are with her and fingers crossed this early diagnosis is incorrect.

Couldn't agree more. #11 for ETSU had more threes in the first half then she ever has in a game throughout her career. I would put big bucks on playing them another 10 times and we would win atleast 8 of them by 30. I never like to use "luck" as an excuse but I'm sorry many of those shots were lucky.

That play just looked really wierd. It look like her ankle rolled a bit which in turn caused her knee to try to compensate. I feel bad for her.

Anybody have an idea about the attendance? EDIT: I just saw it - 4,122.

Box score said 4122 for what that's worth. I would have guessed a little higher myself.

Edit: Sorry for the dupe. Just saw your edit.

Will not bash (I don't do that) and I won't bash the bashers. It was what it was, a win, and a wild game. Wild fun at Cintas (then a great time over at Ryan's Pub).
XU played very very well, 55 1st half points. Amber was unleashed, T was a monster on the boards. As the stripes realized what they were looking at and started blowing the whistle when the muskies got mugged things started falling in place.

The whole first half, and last 7 or so minutes of the second half, ETSU's 3 point shooting was inhuman. They were sticking 3's with a hand in their face, and it wasn't like they kind of found the hoop, they were drained, over and over and over. Defensive switches worked a little, sometimes they didn't. They shot 12-20 in the 1st half, insane. Shit happens sometimes. but in the same game, start of the 2nd half they couldn't buy one, it took a long time for their outside shooting to get back on track.

Prayers with Mossy, I hope that turns out to be not a knee injury, I saw it and really couldn't figure it out, it's almost like one foot stuck to the floor as she planted to make a completely uncontested layup after a steal. On the good side, Barringer, and Katie should be able to fill her shoes if need be. As long as Special does what she does, all will be ok. I spoke briefly with Father Graham after the game, he says Mel is planning on having her girls shoot threes with the same accuracy as ETSU :):)

Only drawback of the day was that our floor announcer had to rein himself in, I know, the NCAA requires you to be "balanced" when doing the floor announcing, sucks that he had to do that, but that's the rules. He does a very good job.
All in all, a hell of a day, can't wait for Tuesday night!

It didn't sound like the PA was reining himself in; even on ETSU's 3s he sounded like he couldn't believe they were going in. Their players were probably used to shooting at a roughly 30% clip from behind the arc; that was the only way (and I mean ONLY way) they could possibly play to win. They just didn't have the size or talent to beat Xavier in the lane.

And for those who haven't followed the ladies closely of late, they've had trouble closing out almost all of their league games, but still found ways to win late in the game. It's begging for disaster in an environment like the NCAA Tournament, but Xavier did get it to Amber and Ta'Shia down the stretch.

It will be a real bummer for Ty Moss if she did indeed blow out an ACL; the big stink was that it was a completely uncontested layup at that point. She looked overexuberant taking the shot and just came down at a very awkward angle. I hoped it was just a cramp, but judging by the way she went down I don't see that being the case.

On the plus side, Vandy didn't have a picnic against DePaul, either. 2 of their starters played a full 45 minutes and you have to wonder how they'll hold up Tuesday night. They can also shoot the 3 well but I'm not sure they'll be able to control the twin towers down low.

The attendance was a little disappointing but not surprising considering the start time was prior to Xavier-Pitt. I would expect maybe another thousand some fans on Tuesday considering there's no other conflicts taking place.

I was 3 rows from the floor in between the Vandy fans and their band, and I'm pretty certain that the girls from Katies Corner were in front of me. They actually had a banner but were not allowed to hang it because of the "neutral" factor. So yeah, they were really enforcing that.

Also, with no advertisements allowed in the arena either, they had to cover up half the scoreboards with this ugly black covering. It looked just awful. I can't wait for the new scoreboard and ribbon boards to be installed in the off season. Next year, when we host again, we shouldn't have that problem with the fixed ads.

XU-PA
03-22-2010, 08:39 AM
I thought that was Katies Korner!

QC, the whole "neutral" thing with the NCAA is one of the unfortunate parts of the tourney. You miss out on all the on court fun during the timeout breaks etc. Wouldn't it be great to get a quick game of Mascot basketball during the half?? I did like the XU dangers performance, that was nice.

On the announcing topic, I still do some announcing, for Colby College in Maine. We had home NCAA Division 3 games, and I got around the limitation by announcing "up" for both sides. I did my best to remain balanced for both sides, and the NCAA monitor who was there was very happy with my effort.
