Hurdles Beyond Cash Remain for Fordham

Soon after Fordham’s trustees announced last month that the university would infuse a significant amount of money into its men’s basketball program, Athletic Director Frank McLaughlin received an e-mail message from a former classmate. The writer said he had stopped donating to the team because he was disappointed with its lack of progress. But upon hearing the news, he changed his mind.

“There’s a check in the mail today,” he wrote.

It is impossible to know whether money will translate into victories, but Fordham’s quest for success on the court is being cheered by several rivals in the Atlantic 10 Conference whose institutional profiles resemble Fordham’s.

“You’re not going to just flip a switch, but it’s certainly trying to get positive momentum,” said Richmond’s athletic director, Jim Miller, whose men’s basketball team is a No. 7 seed in the N.C.A.A. tournament.

A Jesuit university of 8,000 undergraduates that counts men’s basketball as its flagship program, Fordham has had only one winning season since joining the Atlantic 10 in 1995.

Why don't they just hire Book Richardson as the coach and he can get a steady stream of Gauchos into the program. That could really help.

Wow, wouldn't that be great?

Racoon Face loses his best recruiter and his pipeline to NY and F-m would still suck guaranteeing they'd be kicked out of the league in 3 years because Book couldn't coach a college team.

Sounds like a win/win to me.
