From MADXSTER's earlier thread, here is the current scorecard for the 2010 Coaching Carousel. "Ya can't tell the players without a scorecard!"
3/15/10: Lutz Fired at Charlotte
3/7/10: Kent Reportedly Fired at Oregon
3/7/10: Central Arkansas Fires Chappell
3/6/10: ECU Demotes McCarthy
3/5/10/: Gardner-Webb Fires Scruggs
3/2/10: Wagner Fires Mike Deane
1/28/10: UNCW Fires Moss
1/11/10: Jerry Wainwright Fired at DePaul
1/11/10: Dartmouth Coach Forced to Step Down
12/15/09: Penn fires Glen Miller
12/3/09: Fordham Fires Whittenburg
So, I was looking at the Yahoo page for basketball news during lunch today. Did they really have to dig up this picture of Lutz from 2006 to tell the story? Isn't being fired demeaning enough?

You think they'll go after Kelsey?
Though no names are being circulated at this point, and with no real knowledge of the internal situation going on at Charlotte, I'd say that this might be a good bet. With Kelsey's ties to the NC area, and with the fact that he is one of the top Assistants in the country, I could definitely see Charlotte at least paying attention to Kels.
I'm not so sure Kels would be willing to jump ship from X, Cincinnati, and his family ties after one year and for another A-10 team, but it would be smart of Charlotte to at least ask the question.
EDIT: Another coach to watch out for would be Davidson's head man, Bob McKillop.

Longtime Charlotte 49ers coach Bobby Lutz is fired
Charlotte 49ers men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz, the winningest coach in school history, was fired today after his team failed to make postseason play in the NCAA or National Invitation tournaments for the second consecutive season.
Lutz met with athletics director Judy Rose and informed his assistants of her decision this morning.
Lutz still had four years remaining on his current contract, which went through the 2013-14 season with a base salary of at least $237,000 per year. He received an extension prior to last season.

Todd Lickliter fired as Hawkeye basketball coach
The University of Iowa has fired men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter.
Athletics Director Gary Barta made the announcement about 2:35 p.m. at a news conference announced earlier this morning.
Barta said he talked to Lickliter today and "I announced to him that he would no longer be our head men's basketball coach."
Barta said that he thinks Lickliter is an excellent basketball coach.
"I believe that when I hired him and I still believe that today," he said.
But mounting losses, declining attendance, declining revenue from ticket sales and overall declining basketball revenue made a change necessary.

Xavier pays very well by comparison.
rworkman09
03-15-2010, 06:14 PM
That is just Lutz's salary from the state. If you look up Roy Williams' salary at Chapel Hill, they're pretty much the same because there is a cap on what they can earn in state dollars. With other incentives, Lutz made 400-450k per season.
We'll have to put up better dollars than that if we want to get anyone with a good track record in here. An assistant looking for his first head coaching gig may go for 400k, but not many experienced head coaches with success would.

I'm expecting teams to look at Groce down at OU. He doesn't have a long history as HC, but it seems like he's starting to get OU competitive again. He has been known as a good recruiter as well, so maybe a place like Charlotte would be a good fit at this point. The key might be OU giving a decent showing at the Tourney.
As for Kelsey, I definitely think he'll get some calls. I would hate to lose him, but that's the chance you take when you bring in a top assistant who is on the verge of being the main guy. Anyone know what range his salary is in? If it's high enough it might keep him out of some of the low-level jobs and some of the mid-level gigs might be looking for someone more established.
Another guy I wouldn't be surprised to see get some low-level looks is Archie Miller.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Pearl#Pearl.2FThomas_incident
Both interpretations I have make me cynical. Either Illinois gave Thomas the car and money, and he denied it as to not sink his current program. Or Pearl knew that there was enough dirty at Illinois that he just needed a credible accusation to get investigators in there. I'm inclined to believe the former.
Nobody came out smelling good in that one, and Pearl's career certainly took a hit.

Kent spent 13 seasons in Eugene and seemingly was on the hot seat for the last half-dozen or so.
He was 235-173 overall, but was just 8-23 last season and 16-16 this year – including a 7-11 mark in Pac-10 play.

Tubby to Auburn
Posted on: March 19, 2010 1:41 am Edited on: March 19, 2010 3:41 pm
OK, Minnesota has lost in the NCAA Tournament. Now what?
I reported Thursday night that Auburn is "close" to hiring Tubby Smith as its new basketball coach. That's according to a source close to the situation. Things get a lot easier now that Minnesota's season is over.
It could be nothing, but it is known that the school might be looking for an African-American coach. And Tubby getting back to the SEC would make sense. It's not the pressure cooker of Kentucky. It's a new building and a lot of rebuilding with the Tigers.
Tubby reportedly makes $1.75 million per season at Minny. I'm hearing Auburn would go $2 million per season.
It could get complicated. Tubby's name has come up at Oregon as well. Ducks AD Mike Bellotti announced Friday he was stepping down. Don't know yet who is going to be the interim or who is going to run the search.
The website auburnundercover.com has jumped in with details saying that Auburn AD Jay Jacobs is "highly interested" in Tubby and that there may be mutual interest.

RMU coach Rice: Other schools have interest in me
Robert Morris men's basketball coach Mike Rice is a wanted man, and his current employer wants to keep him around.
A day after Colonials lost a 73-70 overtime heartbreaker to Villanova in the opening round of the NCAA Division I tournament, Rice was hoping to relax at home in Fox Chapel.
But he was busy doing interviews on talk shows in Atlanta; Washington, D.C.; Toronto; and two in Pittsburgh, where he answered numerous questions about the game, the officiating and his future.
The Colonials drew national attention with their play against the Wildcats, and Rice's name has become popular with college coaching positions opening up.
Rice said his agent, Dennis Coleman, has received preliminary contact from colleges but would not specify which ones.
Some of the schools that currently have openings include DePaul, Oregon, St. John's, Seton Hall and Fordham, which is Rice's alma mater.

"It's not every day a dream can come true ... I am thrilled, excited, humbled and grateful for the opportunity," said Arnold, wearing a green Hawaiian shirt and leis.
Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan announced the selection of Arnold. He succeeds Bob Nash, who was fired after going 34-56 in three seasons with the Rainbow Warriors, including 10-20 in 2009-10.
"(I wanted someone) who was hungry, had extensive recruiting experience and a plan specific for UH," Donovan said. "Also someone with a clear vision for the future of our basketball program and could fit into Hawaii's unique culture. That's why Gib is here with us today."
Donovan said seven finalists were interviewed among 50 applicants. The other favorite was believed to be Saint Mary's associate head coach Kyle Smith.

Penders Out in Houston
Tom Penders will step down as head coach of the Houston men’s basketball team on Monday .
Fanhouse reported Penders was forced out and the Houston Chronicle said he is retiring.
ZAGSBLOG previously reported that former Kentucky and Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie was a leading candidate to replace Penders. Gillispie and Rhoades have a friendship dating to the time when Rhoades was a senior staffer at UTEP.
Several other candidates have been mentioned, including former NBA coach Avery Johnson, former USC and NBA coach Tim Floyd and Texas assistant Rodney Terry.

EAST CAROLINA SET TO HIRE FORMER AUBURN COACH
It didn’t take long for Jeff Lebo to find a new gig.
The former Auburn coach, who was fired after a 96-93 overall mark in six seasons, has agreed to take the East Carolina opening – replacing Mack McCarthy.
Sources told FOXSports.com that is official announcement is expected either late Monday or Tuesday.
The ECU board of trustees is meeting this afternoon to approve the hiring.
Before going to Auburn, Lebo, 43, spent two seasons at Chattanooga and four at Tennessee Tech. He also played at North Carolina from 1986-89 under Hall of Famer Dean Smith.
East Carolina was 10-19 this past season and 4-11 in Conference USA.

With Jobs Open, Cornell’s Donahue Stays On Point
ITHACA – Cornell Coach Steve Donahue knows his name is out there.
He knows that Fordham, Seton Hall and St. John’s — among other schools — are looking for coaches and could have interest in him when Cornell’s terrific N.C.A.A. tournament run ends.
Donahue, who had been at Cornell for 10 years and was an assistant at Penn for 10 years before that, isn’t the type to habitually seek other jobs.
When asked how he’s balancing the possibility of landing a higher-paying job at a bigger school with No. 12 Cornell’s match-up against No. 1 Kentucky, Donahue said it wasn’t a problem.
“I’m managing it,” he said. “But it’s easy for me because I think it would be very selfish of me to not dedicate myself to these seniors. Every time I go that way, whether it’s mentally thinking about those things or picking up the phone to return a call, I don’t. I don’t.”

Source: No Offer Made to Hewitt
St. John’s athletic director Chris Monasch met with Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt Tuesday night in Atlanta but no job offer was made, according to a source close to Hewitt.
“They did meet but Hewitt was not offered the job. They had a conversation,” the source said.
The source was uncertain if the two men would meet again in person or how they would proceed.
The planned meeting between Monasch and Hewitt was first reported by the New York Post, which also reported that Hewitt, Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg and Florida’s Billy Donovan were at the top of St. John’s wish list.
Donovan has said he plans to remain at Florida, while Greenberg reportedly told his players he would stay at Virginia Tech.
According to the Journal Constitution, Hewitt’s base salary this season was $1.375 million. St. John’s is reportedly offering more than $1.5 million and Monasch said he was willing to make the new coach one of the top 25 highest-paid coaches in the country. “Yes, we are ready to make that commitment,” Monasch said.

That can't be possible, can it? Someone turned down a school in the mighty Big East. Hell, I figured even Coach K would have to leave Duke if any of the BE teams came calling. Phil Jackson, for that matter, would surely put the South Florida job a few notches above his post with the Lakers. Nope. Gregory has a 65% winning percentage. 68% if you remove the 14-17 season. While that isn't a great record overall, it is not too bad either. That is roughly comparable to Prosser's winning percentage of 69% while at XU. Would XU have fired Prosser?

Floyd was at UTEP as an assistant under the late Don Haskins from 1978-86. He has had a lengthy coaching career as a head coach at Idaho, New Orleans, Iowa State, the post-Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls and the Hornets before going back to college in 2005 with USC. “We have hired Tim Welsh as our new coach,” a Hofstra source said.
Welsh spent 10 years at Providence but was fired after the Friars went 15-16 in 2007-08, with starting point guard Sharaud Curry limited to one game because of injury.
Welsh led Providence to the NCAA tournament in 2001 and 2004, losing in the first round both times. He had a 160-143 record with the Friars.
**Elsewhere on the Coaching Carousel, Fairfield coach Ed Cooley is interviewing today for the Boston College job. Cornell coach Steve Donahue will also interview today, sources said. BC coach Al Skinner was fired last week.
**At Iona, sources said the list to replace Kevin Willard includes Fran Fraschilla, Steve Masiello, Fred Quartlebaum and Willard assistant Shaheen Holloway.

A few tidbits before I head to this Hall of Fame deal:
- Source told FOXSports.com that St. Benedict’s coach Dan Hurley has accepted the Wagner job.
- Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, the coach-in-waiting when Jim Boeheim retires, withdrew from the Charlotte opening. The candidates include Pat Kelsey (Xavier), Russell Springmann (Texas), Joe Dooley (Kansas) and Alan Major (Ohio State).
- Iona has targeted television analyst Fran Fraschilla, who has withdrawn from the opening. The Gaels are looking at Louisville assistant Steve Masiello, ex-St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts and Florida assistant Richard Pitino.
- St. John’s coach Steve Lavin’s first hire on his staff will be that of Drexel’s Tony Chiles.

Purnell might be the best coach they could have picked, all things considered. The guy is a lock to build a program to a certain point, and then he'll move on. He did it at Radford, Old Dominion, Dayton, and Clemson. If he takes another job after DePaul, he'll build them to his ceiling as well. He shows up, builds you to the NCAA tourney a couple of times, loses the tourney game, and then finds a new gig. That's what DePaul needs. When Purnell is done the Brad Stevens' type guys at the time will actually have interest in DePaul.

Catching up on the coaching carousel
The coaching carousel has spun quickly, but hasn't reached the highest level of the game just yet.
It may not, either. Try as it might to be deemed a marquee job, Oregon is only in that category because of the money Nike has invested in the university. Otherwise it is simply a Pac-10 school no different than most and certainly behind UCLA and Arizona as the two most recognizable names in the conference.
So far the annual coaching carousel hasn't delivered a blockbuster move like a year ago when Kentucky was open and filled by John Calipari. But it's still early. For now the jobs have been solid, not spectacular. Here's a rundown of the hirings that have occurred so far:

CLEMSON UNDERSTANDS WHAT IT IS
It took DePaul nearly three months to finally come down to earth. Oregon is coming up on a month without a coach since getting rid of Ernie Kent.
Clemson, thus far, has taken the correct approach.
Get someone who wants and fits the job.
The Tigers athletic director Terry Don Phillips and associate athletic director Bill D’Andrea aren’t wasting their time going after guys that aren’t coming.
The two administrators, who are both “football guys”, know what they are – unlike Oregon and DePaul – who both have over-inflated egos of their institutions.
Thus, Clemson has communicated with a handful or so candidates – most of whom are qualified and would fit the program.

WAKE AGREES TO DEAL WITH COLORADO'S BZDELIK
Wake Forest will hire Colorado coach Jeff Bzdelik to replace Dino Gaudio.
FOXSports.com reported that Bzdelik was the frontrunner on Friday and the two sides have agreed to a deal, according to multiple sources.
Bzdelik, 57, has been at Colorado for the past three years and spent two seasons in the NBA as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets from 2002-04.
He and Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman, a former college baseball coach, have a relationship that dates back to when both were at Northwestern.
Bzdelik's daughter also attends Wake Forest.
Prior to taking the Colorado job in 2007, Bzdelik compiled a 50-16 record in two seasons at Air Force from 2005-07 and went to the NCAA tournament.
Bzdelik has also been a college assistant at Davidson, Northwestern and UMBC and has been in the NBA as an assistant and scout for 15 years.
Bzdelik would take over a Wake Forest program that has lost three players early to the NBA in the last two seasons: James Johnson and Jeff Teague last year and Al-Farouq Aminu this year.
The front-runner to replace Bzdelik is Colorado assistant Steve McClain - a former head coach at Wyoming.
