It's been 20 years. I honestly don't think I've ever been affected as much by an athlete's death. I fell in love with that LMU team. They were so much fun to watch and they were another "little" school that was making a name for itself those last two years Kimble and Gathers played at LMU. The XU-LMU game at The Gardens was one of the best games I've ever seen in person. The year before when X played them in LA, was just as nuts while watching it on tv. I missed the WCC tournament game when he collapsed. I didn't find out he died until the next morning when I was getting ready to go to school (I was in 7th grade). I think once I got home, I spent the rest of the day watching ESPN.

That game LMU played against Michigan was the greatest tribute anyone paid to him.

Outside the Lines had on Kimble, Fryer and Westhead this evening. Man, what a team they had. I still remember getting chills seeing Kimble shoot the left handed free throw.
ABC apparently airing a documentary about Gathers in early April - part of the 30 for 30 thing ESPN's doing.

With Lionel Simmons? I wish we had THAT LaSalle in the A-10! Didn't they finish up something like 31-3?

That was the first time I ever stayed up late as a kid to watch an NCAA Tournament game - LMU vs. New Mexico State. I remembered hearing about Gathers dying on an ABC News telecast, but I didn't remember him as an LMU player at that point.
Once I saw Bo Kimble shooting the FTs and the announcer (Greg Gumbel, I think) explaining the story behind it, I definitely had chills down my spine.
Fox did a Hank Gathers movie during the mid-90s; I wonder if that's going to be replayed anytime soon.

I always forget how Strong and Hill had huge individual performances in that one. I remember Kimble going off, I remember Jamal's shot, I remember Jeff Fryer hitting a bunch of 3's, and I remember the whole game just being a constant run-and-gun.
I wish I had checked back on this earlier. I didn't know about the ESPN Classic games.

IF Hank Gathers was playing right now, Evan Turner would wish he could be like Hank.
Greatest college player I've ever seen. Did it ALL. Dude was ridiculous.

Thanks for sharing. For all the younger Xavier fans, check the box score:
- Tyrone Hill - 38 points, 20 boards
- Derek Strong - 24 points, 24 boards
- Future NBA'er Aaron Williams was on the team too
- Xavier legends like Davenport, Walker and Gladden (I was 9 at the time and worshiped Jamie Gladden)
Xavier basketball stands on the shoulders of giants.
