TOLEDO, Ohio - After winning the doubles point, the Xavier women's tennis team went on to win four out of six singles matches to notch a 5-2 win over Toledo Sunday afternoon at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo. The Musketeers improve to 5-1 overall while the Rockets suffer their first loss of the year, falling to 2-1.
"Today, and really the entire weekend, we played solid tennis," said sophomore women's tennis player Jill Ducro following the match. "Even when we weren't playing at out best we kept fighting. This gives us motivation to keep playing well and win."
Ducro and junior Jeanette Feider both remain unbeaten in singles play after picking up wins on Sunday. At the No. 5 position, Ducro defeated Jessica Azoulay 6-3, 6-2, while Feider got past Sarah Horning, 6-1, 6-2, playing at the six spot.
The Musketeers picked up the doubles point after winning two out of three doubles contests. Ducro teamed up with senior Annie Diedalis at No. 3 to down Horning and Azoulay, 8-6. In the No.2-spot, freshmen Christie Pleiman and Tifanie Treece got past Nadia Zoubareva and Jenny Belsky, 9-8 (3).
XU will return to action Saturday, Feb. 9, with a trip to Columbia, Mo. to take on Missouri at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. CT). On Sunday, Feb. 10, the Musketeers will face Chicago State in a neutral site match-up. First serve on Sunday is set for 11 a.m. (10 a.m. CT).
