Not surprising to most of us, Xavier is now a "lock" for the NCAA Tournament in this week's ESPN Bubble Watch!
What caught my eye is the fact the A-10 is now looking at only getting 3 teams in “The Dance.” It seems like every year entering the conference schedule the A-10 gets some pub about winning some key non-conference match ups, and have a strong chance to get 3,4, maybe 5 teams in the dance. BUT, like always the 4th, 5th, and 6th place teams in the A-10 standings find a way to lose some awful conference games costing the A-10 more NCAA bids.
The A-10 will likely get 3 bids if St Louis and Dayton split their games this week, and either Temple, Richmond, or Xavier wins the A-10 Tournament. (Dayton plays: St. Louis and @ Richmond, and St. Louis plays: @ Dayton and Temple.)
4 bids may also be possible if St. Louis wins both their games this week, and has a strong performance in the A-10 Tourney, OR if Dayton wins both its remaining regular season games and has a good run in the A-10 Tournament. Of course, if either St. Louis or Dayton wins the A-10 Tournament they will receive an automatic bid.
The only way I see the A-10 getting 5 bids is if St. Louis can find a way to win both their games this week, has a solid performance in the A-10 Tournament and Dayton wins the A-10 Tourney, OR if Dayton wins both its match ups, does well in the A-10 Tourney, and St. Louis wins the A-10 Tournament.
At this point both Charlotte and Rhode Island have to win the A-10 Tournament to get in.
With all that said I think the A-10 will get 4 bids, (Xavier, Temple, Richmond, and either St Louis/Dayton will win the A-10 Tourney) but would not be surprised to see just 3. My one gripe with the A-10 is how inconsistent teams like Rhode Island, Charlotte, and Dayton are, it really drags down the A-10 as a whole. If these teams win the games they should (against teams like St. Bonaventure, GW, St. Joes, Duquesne) all the A-10's NCAA resumes would be stronger and we would be talking about 5 or 6 teams in "The Dance!"
