From UDPRIDE, and our no backbone friend Jcubspoe (or Flyer 75 formerly from the A-10 board until UD pooped their pants again and he quit posting).
"Not sure if I witnessed a more lucky program the last ten years then what X has gone through. I mean seriously. Few injuries, if any, maybe the one to Thornton, that's it. Every coach working out for you. Seriously, most programs, I don't care who you are, can't go through 3-5 coaches and never miss a beat. Kelvin Samson...need I say more, he's gift wrapped Holloway, Crawford, and Lavender for you guys. Take one game for example of the difference between UD and X this year. Both at SLU. Mitchell banks in a 35 footer with no time left to send us to overtime, he misses a standard three with no one around him to lose to you guys. West turning into a Naismith winner would have been like London Warren doing the same thing...that's what the odds were. Sato arriving from Africa and having no clue what state he was in and gets offered by X first, looks at no one else, commits, turns into an 18 and 8 guy. A 10-9 team, booed by the fans, turns into an E8 team. Chalmers turns into Tim Hardaway for a 3 week period...I could go on and on and on......"

He did afterword admit he was jealous...which is all I wanted.
I hate Duke, Syracuse, UK etc and am jealous of them. I admit it. I want what they have. Deep down, so do UD and UC fans.

As Mike McDermott says in the cab on his way to Kennedy Airport at the end of Rounders:
"People insist on calling it luck."
Same theory applies here.
I love it. I don't think it's just luck though. I believe other teams are just afraid to beat us and let us win, dayton being the program that sets the example.

Well the difference is that you realize that they are good, and not that they have been lucky. Sato was playing high school ball in the city of Dayton, it is UD's fault they didn't offer him early.
A fluke season may be called lucky but continued success over a couple decades is not lucky.
I like how he conveniently leaves out things like the Duke, OSU, and Pitt games in our luck department. I also like how it's luck to have several good coaches not missing a beat from the previous one, but leaves out the "luck" of losing coaches every few years. Luck is prevalent in Dante Jackson hitting the half court shot. Not so much the best word for describing 30 years of greatness though.

People who work hard make their own luck. X works hard from top to bottom. ud must not. Cal it what you want, but call is success not matter what.

Supposedly OP handled Sato's recruitment badly while X did not. I heard OP walked into the meeting and told Sato he was going to UD and did not try and woo him. Did not sit well with with Sato and his guardians. Rest is history.

Has UD had any injury approaching the injury to Thornton? He was clearly the best player on that team, and an all-league level performer. Add in the injury to Darnell (I think with him X would have made the tourney that year), and it's not like the injury bug has not occurred.
What injuries has UD had? Chris Wright as a freshman? Is that it? Talk about lucky...

OMG Though they had the flu last year and OMG they got sick from Philly Cheesesteaks!!!
No team could possibly overcome these hurdles!

No injuries?
David West in 2001-2002 (ankle)
Lionel Chalmers in 2003-2004 (foot)
Brandon Cole in 2004-2005 (ACL)
Brian Thornton in 2005-2006 (Leg)
Josh Duncan (Back)
Brad Redford this year (Hip)
Mark Lyons this year (Knee)
I'm probably forgetting some, but there have been players and games affected due to injuries
It's not a surprise that a UD fan would make a baseless claim

Lavender's ankle in '07-'08 - He was never completely the same that season after the injury
JLove during his freshman season, though he was 3rd string
Darnell Williams was perhaps the most the most costly. Talk was that he was the most coveted player by the NBA (over Posey). That could have really been a special season with Williams, Posey, Brown and Lumpkin.
There were guys who were injured and never really got a chance, like Barker and Coly.
Chris Mack's multiple knee injuries hurt X in the Gillen era. He was never the player at X that he could have been if healthy.
Those are some others off the top of my head.
Didn't we also lose Dedrick Finn during Sean's first year and we won the A10 tourney with Wolf as the PG?

a little off topic, but I went to their boards yesterday to see what they were saying and while they watched the X-Richmond game, they actually seemed halfway intelligent. Commenting on how good of a team Richmond is, etc... then later they started a post claiming with how Dayton is playing on the interior and so forth, they should dominate Richmond easily. Can they get anymore delusional at this point? Maybe they do have a good interior game, but have they shown, even once (not counting us) that they can really play on the road? And don't they know that Richmond is going to want blood?

Well, they have had the misfortune of Kurt Huelsman staying healthy.

He forgot to mention that Jimmy Carter didn't get a second term in office and isn't likely to get another shot.

Oh, man, if Carter runs and wins in '12, we're going to look awfully foolish with our Jimmy Carter chants! Come January '13, Dayton just might have a shot. If Jimmy Carter is President again. Never say never.

Funny thing was that we lost Thornton but still made the tournament because other guys stepped up and developed(Dayton players aren't sure what that means).

Add in the injury to Darnell (I think with him X would have made a deep run in the tourney that year)
Fixed that for ya

Even with Darnell, we still would have been weak in the frontcourt and lacked depth. Going into that year, the loss of T.J. and Torraye was underrated.

UD fans are now talking about how they win AT richmond, then run the table including the A10 tourney...I just don't understand what is in the water up there?

It hasn't been luck on our part in the cheating department - we've never cheated and don't need to cheat - whereas Dayton has proven that it can be a dirty program.
Mr. Brooks Hall comes to mind.
Maybe he's pissed that the Partridge Family never got back together.

When UD has an injury they lose and make excuses. When we have an injury Doellman puts on a mask and becomes superhuman. Of course they're pissed.

Don't forget that was during the time of, "There's no such thing as a bad shot in Xavier basketball."
