X Baseball's weekend series against GT

Xavier starts a 3 game series today against Georgia Tech.

So far so good. X has tied up the score at 3 with RBI's from Ben Thomas, Bobby Freking, and Ryan Bellamy. Nate Mutsch has come back pretty strong against a good GT team only allowing 3 earned runs in 6 innings pitched.

It is the top of the 7th as I type, with Phil Bauer leading off. This would be a huge win to get back on track after getting swept by Tennessee.

I know it's early, but to see them going toe to toe with an ACC powerhouse like Tech is a good sign. Like I've said, while the non-conference is important, it's just preparation for the A-10. Another conference title would be very impressive

Yeah, it's always a good sign when a northern team like Xavier can match a southern team like GT.

GT recently knocked in a run to take the lead 4-3. Pitching change on the way for X.

I think we can only win one game this series, if any, and this game is probably our best shot.

Man, oh man. What a start to the season. Xavier loses 5-4.

X had the bases loaded in the top of the 9th with nobody out. Our #4 hitter, Ben Thomas, strikes out swinging. And then, Bobby Freking bounces into what sounded like a crazy double play because it ricocheted off of one of the infielders. Tough, tough loss.

All of this will pay off though. Lessons will be learned.

Don't get me wrong with this, I love anything to do with Xavier, but our baseball team is a group of guys it is very difficult to actually want to do well.

That being said, they got drilled at UT minus one game, and are probably going to come back with 1 win (Campbell), before going on the road and getting drilled again.

1-10 heading home wouldn't be an optimistic start.

The majority of the problem is that a team like GT is obviously getting better practice time in down in Atlanta. When you are a team from the north you're going to hit a rough patch and thats to be expected. Stealing the UT game would have been really awesome, and we faired better against GT then I ever expected.

I hope Coach Googins is like the Bob Staak of the Xavier baseball program. Last year was a good place to start, now they gotta carry on the new tradition. I know that they most likely won't become a powerhouse baseball team because of their location, but they defenitely (I always forget how to spell defenitely, not sure if thats the right spelling) can build on last year's precedents. They are still a pretty young team with somewhere around 13 freshman, so they will probably do better once they gain some experience, and this year's tough schedule will help.

Xavier is to college baseball what Fordham is to college basketball. Not really there fault, but my god, people in the deep south are just striaght silly about college baseball. It is bigger than basketball at Florida, FSU, Georgia, LSU, etc. The facilities they have are just crazy.

I wanted to play baseball at X (even with no scholarship money--totally pay my own way) but inexplicably their coach at the time (98) (total prick) told my coach when he called him that "we do our own recruiting". I had offers from several programs that would be classified as better than Xaviers--with ship money, but he was to arrogant to even take info.

Considering I only ended up playing one year of baseball I wish I just would have went to X as a student. One of my biggest regrets.

Also thought I would add that recruiting of baseball for colleges around ohio is (or was) strange. It may have been different at Ohio St. or UC, but the way it worked with the MAC, and at least Xavier was weird. A LOT of guys I played with/against who were 2nd level type players ended up playing D-1, while some of the best went D-II or NAIA. Scholarship money seemed more abundant for local guys at non D-1 level. While the 2nd tier guys were getting no money at X/UD/UC/Mac Schools, the better players were getting nice financial packages, particualrly at NAIA schools. Meanwhile, the local D-1's always recruited out of staters. It was freakin weird, because Cincinnati has great baseball talent and Summer League Programs (Midland, Storm Club, Dixie Stars, and at the time JTM were national powers--while there was great high school ball too) but then the programs would get kids from 6 states over. I never EVER saw Xavier coaches at any local summer games or tournaments, but you would see a dozen pro scouts and college coaches from as far off as Nebraska on a regular basis.

I can't agree with you that Xavier is the Fordham of college baseball. Xavier actually won the league last year, something Fordham will never accomplish in basketball.

I do know one thing though, baseball players, especially in the south, are the most arrogant athletes in all of sports. But that's ok with me, baseball will always be my #1 sport.

That's really unfortunate that a coach would totally disregard a player. I'm too young to know who that coach would be in the '98 season, but it just exemplifies how narrow-minded baseball guys can be.

Well, there are a LOT of Fordhams of college baseball. If there was ever not a level playing field college baseball is it. While in a 1 game setting a non baseball school could beat a power based off having an individual stud on the mound, when you play 6 games in 4 days the pitching of the power programs will just totally overwhelm the majority of schools. That's why I can't like college baseball. The season I actually played I didn't like it, talk about too much on a freshmen STUDENT athlete. Classes when you could, hours on top of hours of travel, double headers day after day, when you actually get home study tables. It was assanine.

If college baseball would move their season to the summer it would make so much more sense, and would also be much more beneficial to the athletes as students, while giving northern schools fair prep time. But somehow, some way, the NCAA makes more $$ off how it is currently done, so it will remain. (same goes for fast pitch).

Yeah, I wish I could have listened to the broadcast, but I was away. The only game I don't listen to, they win. Figures.

This team really misses the early departure of one Dan Rosenbaum. The lefty was a great pitcher and an even better kid. The team has to be missing his leadership and ability to keep things light that is so essential to being successful over a long, cold, college baseball season. Hopefully some of the seniors can step up and be true leaders.

I think Drew Schmidt fits the defenition of a leader. He is they player I root for the most.

On another note, X's pitching hasn't been too great so far this year. I'm pretty dissapointed in how the season has turned out to this point, but I think the a-10 season will propel us to a better record, and another appearance in the tourney. I think this non-conf schedule is preparing them for another conference championship.
