Okay, we know UNC is having a lousy year. But, is Roy Williams really dumb enough to use this quote at a press conference?

"Our massage therapist told me, 'You know, coach, what happened in Haiti is a catastrophe. What you're having is a disappointment,' " Williams said. "I told her that depends on what chair you're sitting in. It does feel like a catastrophe to me, because it is my life."

Sure, your lousy record is tantamount to the devastation in Haiti.

In defense of Roy (someone I have grown to dislike this season), I think people are going overboard with his comment. I'm sure Williams is aware that Haiti is much more of a tragedy in the big picture. But, as far as his life is concerned, UNC having this bad of a season is a tragedy. It's ridiculous to compare totally different things to determine whether something is a tragedy, success, etc.

It would seem that a fatal car accident would be a tragedy, but is it really if you compare it to Haiti or the Holocaust? Big picture, probably not. But in the lives of those affected, that car accident is a big deal. It's important, tragic, life-changing/ending.

Roy Williams is the coach of one of the best college basketball programs in history. He's leading a bunch of young men, all with the goal of winning in the regular season and the tournament. It's something that is expected at UNC. For the team to be so bad this year is, in Roy's life and in Chapel Hill, a very big deal. We can't get caught up in trying to compare it to something even bigger to de-value what the Tar Heels are going through. If that was the case, there would ultimately be one thing that each individual would consider tragic because nothing else would measure up.

Roy has proven to be a bit of a douchebag this year, but I think he deserves to be cut a little slack on this one.

I like the quote. It's refreshingly honest.

And I'm sure he actually feels that way. I hope all coaches would feel that way. Your job performance should be really important to you.

It is an indefensible comment made by an ego-maniacal man. Roy Williams is an awful person to listen to speak.

There's no problem with the comment. Williams NEVER said Haiti was not a catastrophe. His point is that, when you're the head coach at UNC, a bad/losing season for the Tar Heels is a catastrophe to you. But I haven't heard Roy get out there and say to the people of Haiti, "buck up, it was just a little quake. We're losing games and that's far more important." He's just pointing out that UNC's season is catastrophic to him in the context of college basketball, especially when he's the head coach.

(And let me point out again that I'm not a fan of Williams and I think Roy he has shown himself to be a bit of a douchebag this season. I just think people are making way too big of a deal out of his comments.)

The point is, he took an opportunity to bring up the conversation, which was in itself meant to offer slight relief of perspective - not diminish his own experience, to say "I'm so committed to UNC basketball that this 14-10 record is a catastrophe to me on par with when millions of people are hurt."

What. a. douche.

Add that to the legacy of a self centered coach.
