View Full Version : Who has the most delusional fan base?

Does UC or Dayton have the most delusional fan base? Both fan bases are pretty bad and like to re-live moments that happened mostly before they were born. By reading and hearing from both fan bases I have come to the conclusion that neither is in-touch with reality, or even close for that matter.
- Dayton fans think they are so talented and a dangerouse team come tourney time(if they even get in) once they put it together.
- Dayton fans think that they have one of the most talented starting five in the country(with a mule playing center and a PG who couldn't shoot over me) and would challenge any roster's first five.
- Dayton fans think just because they beat WVU in the tournament last year, they somehow arrived as a national power.
- Dayton fans think that the current domination by X over them is purely luck, and has nothing to do with X having a lot better talent and coaching.
- UC fans think just because they won two titles in the 60's and a final four in the early 90's that they are still relevant in college basketball.
- UC fans think that just because they play in the Big East they are a better program than X.
- UC fans think that their roster was so much more talented than X's this year that there was no reason they shouldn't have blown X out.
- UC fans think that their football program is now on par with Ohio State's.
So who's is worse?

dayton fans, no doubt. They talk so much crap and just don't back it up.
UC fans are more concerned with football anyway, and they aren't showing up for their games either.
I HATE dayton.

Well since we're talking delusional I'd have to go with UD since their fans are always the ones running their mouths. If we're talking about not being on the same planet then I would, without hesitation, put a write in vote for the UK fan base, but that's a whole different story.

UC fans--When I brag about Xavier to them they always have great comebacks with how great the conference they are in is and I guess they think thats better then making the tournament every year like Xavier. Bunch of clowns

I harken back to the chat on ESPN where the Dayton fan asked Dana O'Neill if she thought Dayton would win out . . . maybe the better question would be, "Dana, do you see Dayton winning in the A10 again this year? And do you agree with me that the Flyers have passed the Musketeers as a program, since we were the pre-season favorites this year?"

I always think those conference responses are humorous too. It's like saying, "Sure, I suck but my dad can beat up your dad."
The inference is that we get in The Dancebecause we're in the A-10. The reality is that we get in The Dance in spite of it -- meaning we've only needed the automatic bid one time (the '04-'05 season as a #14 seed) since joining the A-10.
Every other season we've been an at-large-level seed, even if we won the A-10 Tournament to receive it's auto-bid. We have had to overcome the conference's weaker SOS in the earlier years of joining it. In recent years though we've scheduled such a strong OOC SOS that we end up with a better SOS than a large number of BCS conference teams.
Still, I don't consider all that delusional. Most at least acknowledge that their team currently sucks and really hasn't done much for the past 10 years (even during the final Huggs years).

UD. They attend the games well year after year despite the disappointments year after year.
UC fans practically abandon the team after Hugs is fired.

It was 05-06 season. 04-05 was Miller's first year in which he finished 17-12 and didn't make the tournament.

Not true, Xavier is the greatest program in the country. We have the best resources, the best players, the best fans, the tv package, the best radio package, the best mascot, the best cheerleaders, the best conference, the best away uniforms, the best coaches, the best marketing deal, the best ball toss, the best beer sales, the best parking.

Dayton fans are the most...
But Kentucky fans, if we included them are pretty delusional.
Here's a funny series of posting from the K board this morning...after their undefeated team was finally ranked No. 1, but lost to South Carolina last night:
Poster 1: When SC was asked where their motivation came from they answered..."Coach put pictures up in our locker room of Sarah Palin. He said if we won she would call us on the phone."
Poster 2: Ridiculous post. Not even funny.
Poster 3: Who's Sarah Palin? LOL!!!!!!

Alright, seeing as I may be biased as I am living with three UD grads and basically their girlfriends/fiances...
They are WAAAAY more delusional.
For one, they believed they had a solid schedule put in place. Obviously thats wrong, because it's hurting them now.
They think that Brian Gregory is a good coach....especially in game. They are happy with what he's brought to the program and honestly fear him leaving for a bigger job. Really? One tourny win... How many A-10 championships? And they then rip on Mack and Miller, saying they were/are over-rated.
They think Christ Wright is Jesus (No lie, they really refer to him as Jesus).
Thats all I've got for now.
On a side note, we had a new roommate from Canada move in. He does not look like this:

But they took him to the Rhode Island game last night, and spent the evening filing his mind about awful things about X. Once they came home, I quikcy corrected him. The NBA players, consecutive seniors graduated, championships, etc.. He wants to go to the game tomorrow. We need Canadian flags there and Maple Leafs to swing him to our side. Who's in?

Dayton fans no doubt. Dayton fans honestly think, as a program, they are not that far off from X. Of course I always take it as a compliment that we are what they strive to be. I always like to ask the neutral fan (not fans of X or Dayton) what they think of the two programs. Most laugh at the Dayton fans for even thinking they fit in the same sentence as us.
X strives to be the UConn, Cuses, Mich States of the world...Dayton strives to be us!

I had to vote UD. My experience with real UC fans, meaning not the ones that hide behind a screen name taking potshots on message boards, is that true red UC fans despise their coach more than we do. (Shoot, we want him signed to an iron clad long term contract, right? Along with Gregory?) They are also now pretty realistic in realizing that the current Bearcat team isn't going to cut it.

Every program has its share of delusional fans, but the UC fans who post to their boards seem to generally be pretty clear-eyed about their program even if they are less realistic about the quality of their prograam relative to the Muskies. UD fans, on the other hand, seem to me to be delusional across the board (with some exceptions on the A10 board). So in my view, the cryers fans win this poll hands-down.

It's where you set the bar...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It't true that college teams win about 70% of the time at home and lose more than 50% of the time on the road.
But we're not talking about "college teams". We are talking about the University of Dayton...and for UD the bar is much higher than it is for "college teams". Div 1 "college teams" do not put 12,500 fannies in the seats for every home game; they do not state as an objective being consistently good enough to compete for the national championship; the importance of their basketball team to overall school objectives does not warrant attention is the school's report on strategic objectives.
A half century of tradition and our legacy establishes the bar at a high level. The university administration welcomes that and does not shy away. Indeed, it invests accordingly...does all it can to clear that bar.
That being the case, we cannot, should not compare ourselves to other "colleges". Our peer group, given where the bar is positioned, is the Top 25 programs in the country. In fact, when the season began everyone thought we were in that group.
The won/loss perecentages at home and away for the Top 25, based on their RPIs as of today are as follows: Winning percentage at home, 93%.....away from home, 66%. I doubt if those figures will chnage significantly by year end; in fact, I'll bet those numbers are typical of most years.
The Flyers meet the Top 25 test when at home, almost always winning more than 90% of the time and sometimes 100%. But, we do not come close to meeting the standard of the Top 25 when on the road,....ever! I think to meet our annual objectives we simply must win half of our road games. Less than half is not enough for us to be where we want to be. Clearly, getting to where we want to be means we've got to focus on our road problems.

That is because you didn't factor in neutral court games, where teams only lose 45% of the time.
