View Full Version : A tale of Cronin, Rivals, and boosters vs media

Check out this thread (http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=412826)on UC's board, which evidently is on all 3 primary UC forums.

Here is a reposted letter from Todd Cunnigham, the Rivals "reporter" and site manager for UC's Rivals site.

----------------

I feel the need to post this on here with Todd's permission. This is from Todd Cunningham on Bearcat Lair.

I think it is important to note that criticism is OK, but there is a blatant negativity that does nothing but hurt the program. I have been guilty of it as well, but just ask that you think before you hit that bottom.

I think that most of us are UC fans here and want the best for the program, but what message are you sending and are you hurting the program yourself?

----------------

"Guys,

I have posted this before but I don't think you realize how much the negativity on the internet affects UC's recruiting efforts.

Case in point, Marquis Teague wants to play for Mick, not UC but for Mick. Both Louisville and Kentucky know this and they are using all the negativity that UC fans are spewing to help combat the recruiting job Mick has done with this kid.

I URGE all of you to stop spewing all the negative stuff that you spew after each game. I am all for free speech but you gotta know that what you post IS affecting recruiting and I encourage you to spread this around because this board is tame compared to some of the stuff I read other places.

Thanks"

-----------

I think it's an incredible breach of both media ethics (would love Q's take on tihs) and booster violations given the full context of Todd's relationship with recruits.

Here is my response that I posted on their board.

A few comments on this ...

As Chatter said earlier, there are plenty of negative comments by our (XU) fans when they're disappointed by anything -- large or small.
Like EJ, I've tried to discourage destructive criticism that reads like personal attacks against players or coaches.
What I find astonishing -- though perhaps not, considering the source -- is that Todd Cunningham posted this. Isn't he in charge of the UC RIvals site? Isn't Rivals a media outlet that actually gets media credentials to games, press conferences, post-game access, etc.?
If the points in my last bullet are true, then WTF!?!?! Seriously. WTF!?!?!

You essentially have someone in the media very clearly playing booster. I mean without any question whatsoever.

This isn't an article by Doc stating fans are upset and they're even posting their anger on the internet, and that it might even be harming recruiting. This is a public plea to UC fans to stop the bashing ("I URGE all of you to stop spewing all the negative stuff you spew after each game").

Not only that, Todd's clearly doing it on Mick's behalf. Seriously, where do you think Todd heard that Louisville and Kentucky are using your guys' comments against Mick? I doubt he heard it from Teague himself, unless he was probing more as a UC fan than as a non-booster with his questioning as media credentialed reporter. I sure as hell doubt he heard these comments from Pitino or Cal, or any of their staff members for that matter ("Hey Todd, this is Cal, man you wouldn't believe how great the spew on your forums is for helping us recruit Teague. Keep up the good work!")

I have to believe he heard them from Mick or someone on the staff and chose to play booster, while still being the same person contacting recruits (supposedly without outward bias or influence). Todd very clearly wants to influence the results -- and not just privately in the back of his head. He didn't just post the original message. He has encouraged other fans to blast his plea on other forums.

He is -- without any doubt -- trying to influence recruiting results. Can you imagine Doc doing this? Bill Koch? Dustin Dow? Shannon Russell? Hell, I can't even imagine Brian Snow doing something like this (or pulling the "Shanahan" bull$hit either for that matter).

Again, WTF!?!?!?!

Look, I'm sure a lot of the Rivals guys are also fans of the programs they cover. Hell, that's probably why they chose to take the gig in the first place. But they sure as hell can't behave like boosters and have it both ways (i.e., I'm the media with completely open access to coaches and recruits, but I'm also a HUGE UC fan who URGES fans to play their part so we can get this top-ranked player).

PUBLIC BOOSTERS DO NOT GET OPEN ACCESS TO RECRUITS! Don't believe me? Send Mick an email, tell him you're a huge fan and would like to land Teague and that you plan to contact him just to check out his current leaning.

I'm sure there's a line out there somewhere as to what boosters can do as boosters and another line as to what media can do as media, and I'm damned sure those lines are different. I'm also damned sure Todd crossed both lines here.

Next time Todd or any of his staff contact a recruit -- which they are likely doing daily -- ask yourself, are they talking to them as a member of the media or are they talking to them as a booster trying to influence the result?

This seems crazy....I'm not too familiar with the rules and regulations, but at the very least, you should make the NCAA aware of what's going on

Most shocking: There's a recruit who wants to play for Mick???

(I mean, have you seen this guy on the sidelines? Spends half his time out yelling at players for no reason...)

This is blowing my mind. Think about all the great coaches in college basketball that you could go play for, and Mick Cronin is at the top of your list? Mick Cronin? There's something seriously wrong with anyone that thinks Cronin's the cream of the crop.

Solid comedy skit there, maybe you can replace Leno/Conan.

I'll probably be listening to that podcast tonight, particularly if it, as you imply, has great entertainment value on a sUCks/Cronin bashing angle.

I guess it's a combination of:

1) Slow work day
2) 2 pepsi max's
3) Anticipation of sitting in great seats at the Cintas Center tonight

But honestly I have no idea. Things like that pop into my head haha

I features the following things:

1) Accusing Vaughn of shaving points for Vegas.
2) Mentioning Vaughn's head has been up his rectal area the last 4 games
3) Calling Alvin Mitchell a knucklehead and wants him kicked off the team
4) UC players just taking up scholarships
5) Pack Biggie McClain's bags
6) Screaming at Mick Cronin and questioning if he's right for the team
7) Yelling about fundamentals
8) Punching the desk 3 times while he yells
9) Questioning if someone has the balls to stand up
10) Telling Mike Thomas to move to Division 2 if they accept the CBI bid

And much much more. He gets more worked up as the podcast moves on. That's just the first hour too

This is amazing. Lance is the biggest douchebag of all time. This is worse than the infamous "Teddy Ruxpin" meltdown after the Michigan State-Notre Dame debacle a few years back.

On further reflection, listening to this explains his ridiculous reaction to the XU-Butler game. He's a guy who has never put on a jock, never played a minute of competitive basketball. He treats college kids like they are professionals. He's a clown and a horse's ass. The fact that he had the balls to accuse Deonta Vaughn of point-shaving on the public airways is simply incredible. The fact that he advocated yanking scholarships from a kid (McClain) who did nothing wrong off the court but hasn't lived up to expectations, it's amazing. Just shows his level of character.

Expectations first, Jimmy Two Times (I'm still laughing --later)
First, that guy Todd has committed a MAJOR violation of NCAA rules if he is Either a UC alum or has been provided media credentials. But even more interesting is his involvement as a UC cheerleader. He may not have contact with recruits (because he has placed himself among the UIC Boosters or representative of the schools athletic interests. ) I know one thing for sure TODD IS DEFINITELY NOT A JOURNALIST If I were his editor, he's be cleaning out the jons in the printers and pressman's latrine. Does he even have an editor?
Jimmy Baby--OK, my man. Now tell me there isn't a recording of Lance Goss spewing on the airwaves and recommending the dismissal of two scholarship players from the UC team?
Seriously. I think Mike Bobinski and Tom Eiser should find some excuses for Xavier players never participating in Lance's show. Yeah, it denies them personal pub time, but Lance has descended into the realms of the tasteless and terribly unprofessional. Failing that because I know it would never happen, allow Xavier players and coaches to go on the show and all spouit the same line: (see "Bull Durham" cliche's scene on the bus). I think that would establish some parameters for McAlister. But, when Xavier fans then ask why they neer get coverage or always nasty crap, they'll know why.
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering we've all got to self-police when it comes to involvement with recruits. Just follow the rules. As Crash Davis says, "Don't think, Meat. You'll only hurt the team.":D:D:D

Jimmy--Lance should have been yanked off the air by the program director or someone similar. If UC had any cohones at all the school's attorney would have been on the phone the next day demanding an apology and told whoever Lance's bosses are to discipline him or there'll be legal repercussions. I can see a seven figure settlement with no non-disclosure clause.
Oh, and Expectations, those people who report for Rivals and the others should never be given credentials for a tiddly winks match, let alone a basketball game. They are a walking cheerleader corps not worthy to wipe up the jons in any newspaper.
I know Andy Furman could be wild and he paid dearly for it but on his worst day, he never accused a UC player of shaving points. That's not satire or hyperbole, that's plain trash. But the thing that's amazing is UC signed Lance Stevenson (admittedly no other school wanted him) and now this other phenom, is supposedly considering UC and wants to play for Mick. I'm sorry. I can't continue. I have to puke. BTW, I had not heard that pod cast. That is the most unprofessional rant I have ever heard. [/I]:D:D:D

I actually felt sorry for the UC players when I listened to it live at the time. I like to bash UC as much as the next Xavier guy, but I wanted to stand up and defend some of those players after that rant... After all, these are 18-22 year old KIDS we're talking about. These aren't professionals. I understand Lance was frustrated and angry, but saying some of those things are unacceptable. I don't think he should have lost his job, but there definitely should have been consequences for that rant.
