Owl Who Took Unusual Path Has the Shot to Match It
PHILADELPHIA — Of the six flights that Temple guard Juan Fernandez took during his round-trip journey home to Argentina and back to campus last week, one was postponed by snow and another because of engine problems. As he prepared to board for the last leg out of Miami International Airport, he was detained for four hours. He had forgotten part of his paperwork.
Fernandez, 19, whose family followed his father, Gustavo, around Argentina to six cities during a 17-year professional basketball career, was unsure of his itinerary two years ago. Several teams in Spain’s B or C leagues had made him offers to play, but his interest was in the United States. To gauge his son’s value there, the father called the national team member Pepe Sanchez, a former Temple star, about the college route.
