Five For Friday

Welcome to the third installment of "Five for Friday". Each week I'll tackle five different topics within the Atlantic 10: A game, a player, a team, a statistic, and a wild-card subject. Players and the team of the week do not necessarily reflect the most outstanding team and/or player, but represent only an individual or squad I find worthy of some ink.

This week, I'll take a look at the importance of Chris Matthews for St. Bonaventure, a fantastic defense carrying Temple to a top 20 ranking, Dayton's match-up with No. 17 New Mexico and more. With Christmas and New Year's Eve now in the rear-view mirror and conference play almost here, each team's final non-conference games become vitally important.

A few huge games this weekend for the Atlantic 10: Dayton travels to the "Pit" in New Mexico to take on the 17th ranked Lobos, Charlotte will host No. 20 Georgia Tech, No. 1 Kansas travels to the City of Brotherly Love to take on No. 19 Temple; Oklahoma State visits Mohegan Sun Casino to face Rhode Island in the second half of a "home"-and-"home", and Xavier prepares to face-off against Wake Forest in an emotional game honoring the late, great, Skip Prosser (more on that below).

With Dayton, Charlotte, Rhode Island and Temple already off to terrific starts, this weekend represents another opportunity for the league to knock off some of the best teams in the country. With the A-10 already the fourth ranked conference in the RPI, top ranked conference in strength of schedule, a good showing this weekend will cement the league's status as one deserving of multiple bids come March.

Enjoy the start of the New Year and, as always, enjoy the games until next Friday...
