View Full Version : Solution to Coaches Moving before the end of a Season
The wholesale raiding of coaches before a season is over seems unethical and unsportsman to me. I have a solution.
NCAA Rule: you tamper with a coach before his season is over, you are banned from postseason t he next season, AND the coach must sit out a year (as transferring athletes must.) Any coach engaging in any attempt to get another coaching job before fully finishing a season must sit a year, regardless of whether he goes to the school.
End of problemo.
Only possible problem, restraint of trade? Some one help me out. Solution: Require all member schools/programs to incorporate the condition into its contracts.

You would be opening a big can of worms that mostly revolves around recruiting. If they set a period where coaches and recruits are off limits, then I would be for some rules in that area. The publicly stated reason for a coach jumping early is to get a leg up on recruiting. Take that away, and the problem probably solves itself.

It seems to me the probem is centered mainly around football. When it comes to basketball how many times have we heard "School A is going to Poach the Coach from School B as soon as School B falls out of the NCAA tournament" I mean it can be all but a done deal, but there seems to be some code of conduct that you wait until a school has exhausted all post season play.
The football community should folow the same rules, no coach poaching until the poachee has completed their season. Again the stated cause is recruiting, how about we create a "No Recruiting Zone" from say Dec 1 until Jan 31. If we have to push signing day back so many days then let's do it.. The only problem I see there is a lot of schools play a so-called "Spring Game" and want to have a somewhat cohesive team to display to their fans/boosters as early as April.
Back to the specific case at hand - Note that the U of Buffalo has granted Quinn permission to remain at sUCks to coach the Sugar Bowl. Would it have really hurt ND to do the same? I recall that sUCks AD said that the decision for Butch Jones to coach in CMU's bowl is entirely between CMU and Jones. I don't recal hearing how that worked out.

The caliber of players being recruited at ND and Buffalo are completely different though. A lot of the Buffalo players may not have even had offers from other schools. They are more likely to be locked in to going to Buffalo then ND players going to ND. Also didnt every UC player pretty much not want Kelly to stay and coach?

I'm not saying the level of talent is the same, just that Kelly should have gotten the chance, if he wanted it. I know a lot of the players didn't want him to stay, but have we heard much from them since their emotions were raw right after finding out?
