XBox vs. PS3?

Thinking of getting one for the kids for Christmas...and I've been out of the video game loop for 15 years. Discuss.

I don't really ever play video games anymore but I would think that if they are younger kids Wii may be the best bet. I'm far from the one to ask though.

It depends on how much you want to use the system. PS3 is better if you have a big interest in blu-ray movies, or netflix streaming, or general movie downloads. Online play is good, but not as big and smooth as X-Box.

If your kids just want a gaming system where they may use the online features only to play the games they have, get the X-Box 360. Bigger game library and online community. Also, if the kids are too young to be playing online and blu-ray isn't a factor, 360 is the choice.

I can't add anything to this post. IT was perfect.

I wouldn't say perfect, you are talking about a Flyers fan, after all.

No, I agree with what he said. Really, the only advantage that PS3 has (outside of a couple of exclusive games) over 360 is Blu Ray.

If your kids are under about 8, though, I think the Wii would be the best option. Just be wary of "shovelware".

Shovelware is basically low level games with little regard to the quality. There are lots of Wii games that were thrown together to have a Wii title to sell, though there was little thought or effort put into creating a really solid game. Kinda like the junky games and add-ons with a new computer.

I think your choice depends on the age of your kids, what they may plan on playing, and watch TV the system will be on. I agree that younger kids will be more engaged by the Wii with the PS3/XBox360 for more of a gaming experience for somewhat older kids. PS3 online play is free while XBox360 costs $$$ - it's certainly of better quality but is that worth it for kids playing online? Also consider what TV the system will be on. A "regular" TV won't show the big benefits of the PS3 and XBox360 while the Wii will be just fine. An HD TV will make the PS3 and XBox360 shine and the Wii will still just be okay.

Finally, some support for the PS3! I really think it's the better system. Add me if you want.
