Are they still a bunch of meatheads? I remember when I was in school and Dian Fossey came to The Woods to study them. This would prove to be the basis for "Gorillas in the Mist."
When I was in school they liked to fight 20 on 1. It was 20 manos el mano. This goon squad wasn't the sharpest set. We're talking the primitive kind. Are they still a bunch of drooling boobs who can't find their collective ass with both hands?
Leakey found the missing link when he watched a Xavier rugby match. He narrowed it down to their Irish inbred leadership.
And they had that whole latent homosexual thing going on. At least I hope it stopped at latent. Reminds me of the time I was riding down at Lunken when some queer rollerbladed by with his shirt off. It was wearing nipple rings. Just then a guy rode by and pointed at it, then he sneered "that's so Xavier rugby."

Not too many people like them. They love to patrol Norwood on Friday and Saturday night looking for fights, and, yes, usually 20 on 1. They don't even play a real sport. Honestly, they're a disgrace to what Xavier stands for.

Isn't the old adage something like 'a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.'
What happened?
Rugby in my day had good guys involved who enjoyed the sport (it is a sport) and through great parties afterwards.

Granted, it is a bit too substantive a topic for Guy...

As it was in my day, which was only a few years ago.
In all seriousness to those bashing the Rugby team, and particularly to the guy who called them a disgrace to all that Xavier stands for, former Rugby players and friends of the Rugby club have done a lot of good for the University. There are many big donors who played Rugby for X and the money that they donate does a lot of good for the school.
I can't speak to today's current players however I find it hard to believe that the behavior would be that much different now than it was in the past.

I once saw a rugbyer punch a guy in a wheelchair. Rugbyers at Danas is worse than the Hell's Angels at Altamont.

Btw, I'm now receiving death threats. Pablo's brother has issued a fatwa. I now know how Salmon Rushdie felt.

Here's my plan: the first rugbyer who attacks me will be met with a rock in the face. Then I'll flee.

Remember those cheesy jackets they'd wear? They were like lettermen jackets for guys who never lettered in anything.

Garvin:
Did you get beat up last night at Dana's by a XURFC alum or current player? Why the hostility and why now?
Rugby is a tough game and attracts aggressive personalities who enjoy the physical challenge, camaraderie and social benefits. Thus, the abundance of Irish! Wallflowers and wusses are generally turned off by the whole experience and prefer to criticize from afar (or join crew/go to Miami) and typically never play a minute.
In fairness, some meatheads did play rugby and when together (and especially after drinking) the lowest common denominator rules. Conversely, some brilliant people did and currently play for the team. Many docs, lawyers, financial pros and some of Xavier’s largest donors are XURFC alums.
The personalities and antics of many of this board are extremely similar to the actions associated/blamed on the Rugby team. Hell, the bus trip to Pittsburgh was exactly like a Rugby road trip – just better wheels and accommodations. I know many posters on this board have been called and/or would be proud to be known as “a bunch of drooling boobs who can't find their collective ass with both hands”.
Xavier Rugby is very similar to a fraternity on many other schools. However, it is sports based (not just social) and they let anyone join if they can play. The parties are a great way to attract chicks and the games always drew large crowds. Yes, they do look out for each other and are not saints. Nonetheless, my brother and I consider playing rugby for Xavier an incredible privilege and one of the best activities of our lives.
Finally, the guy with the nipple rings would never be associated with Xavier Rugby. Sure, we had our fair share of tools on the team. However, that douche would never be tolerated. Plus, if the guys found out he wore nipple rings, they would be immediately ripped out at the next practice or game.
Yours, in Christ, Matt

Well put Matt. I know that the McCormick family were always friends of the Rugby club. I know that I shared a few beers with Brian at Dana's when I was a student!
Hell, I may even have had a beer with you at Dana's at some point (memory is a bit hazy...).

Let’s dissect your post shall we?
“Not too many people like them”
You and your friends do not care for the team.
“They love to patrol Norwood on Friday and Saturday night”
How does this interfere with your studying or Shanty town prep work?
“looking for fights, and, yes, usually 20 on 1”
I cannot condone this activity or odds. However, I can understand why you and your friends get beat up a lot.
“They don't even play a real sport”
Obviously, you have never played. You probably think “band” should be in the Olympics. I bet you $500 you could not last one practice.
“Honestly, they're a disgrace to what Xavier stands for.”
Rugby has won “club of the year” several times. Fr. Graham and Fr. Bischoff count many players as personal friends. Do you think they would want to be associated with rugby or allow the club to exist if your assertion was correct?

Reps for this post. I particularly liked reading the last part, and I would add Adrien Schiess to the list of Xavier administrators who were great supporters of The Club. The Rugby Club has left it's mark upon Xavier University in a decidedly favorable way, and I know of many former Xavier Rugby players who have went on to enjoy great success in life and to give back a tremendous amount to the University. You would be hard pressed to find a group more passionate and dedicated to Xavier University than the Rugby Club.

First of all, as a current XU student and current Xavier Rugger, I would like to say hello. I stumbled accidentally upon this thread, and was intrigued by some of the comments left by some alumni, or better yet by an alumnus. Mr. Garvin, I do not know you nor do I care to know you. However let me reassure you that we are not a huge band of hooligans. Not only have been state champs for the past three years we were also named club sport of the year. The members that make up the Rugby Club here at X are some of campus' finest leaders. Some of our members are officers in the Club Sports Council, we have members on the Disciplinary Board, and we have members who hold several majors and belong to several other clubs including the Pre-Law Club, the Peace Studies Club, and the Pre-Med Club...just to name a few. We are a highly organized club, if not the most organized, and we are in contact with over 250 of our alumni from the past 35 years (which, by the way, makes us the oldest club on campus). Through our website, newsletter, and several alumni events, we pass down information, traditions, and our club's history. So before you go and call us a bunch of meatheads and hooligans, please get your facts straight Mr. Garvin.
Cheers,

Good post, and let me say that I am very impressed with what the current group of players have done with the program. The website is dramatically improved and the club is definitely enjoying some good years. Cheers to you, sir.

I can definitely see how he can be perceived as a prick by some, but my experiences with him were completely the opposite. He went above and beyond to help me out of a bind my freshman year. I may very well owe my graduating from Xavier and subsequent career to him.

Great to see the team is doing so well. I played the first two years after the team was allowed back on campus in the late 90's. I picked up two concussions and the Docs made me quit, so I played lacrosse my last two years.
I really enjoyed playing but I more enjoyed the friendships that I made. It is unfortunate that Rugby has a bad rep in some circles. For the most part, it is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen. Actually, I've networked quit well in business circles just by mentioning that I played the game for a few years. You'd be surprised how many leaders, business or otherwise have played or have an affinity for the sport.
