UD down five 59 secs left.
UD down five 59 secs left.
It was a very brief stay in the top 25 for Dayton. 2-2 this early in the season won't keep you there.

I didn't get to see the Dayton game tonight. Did they lose because of:
a) The refs
b) The flu
or
c) The other team played the game of their lives?
It's always one of those three for the Flyers.

Tonight: they're probably gonna blame the refs.
Another note: I realize it's early, and it will take Aari Murray time to adjust. But why can't LaSalle win some of these games by at least double digits?

What did you guys really expect. I actually bought into it. The coming stretch of games will give them plenty of time to get the warm and fuzzy back though. They have to win out the non-con and be like 12-4 or better A-10 or they will be in trouble selction Sunday, needing Bobo to bail them out again.
The most painful part was when they would pan the Dayton fan section during time outs. Jesus Christ, where do they get the imbreds with the money to get to PR. It looks like their budgets are 2 things: Flyer Basketball, Meth. It looked like most of them have been hittin the pipe for about 4 years. Wow, I thought my UD experience memories would not return.

I'm with you, but unfortunately I'm thinking we have a very, very outside shot of jumping in tomorrow. When we're 6-0 a week from now we should vault to somewhere in the top 20 though.

I agree. Beating YSU, BGSU and Sacred Heart isn't exactly a vaulting point to the Top 25. But, maybe we'll be surprised. What doesn't surprise me is that the Midget's cryers underperform again under his direction.
Go, dayton flyers. Go, go, go!! Go right outta the Top 25.

I am not surprised in the least with the dayton failure so far. That team is the epitome of paper tiger. Totally overrated.
I didn't even see the game, but let me take a guess here, London Warren had zero 3s, and Huelsman got less than 3 rebounds....
Let's see...
I HATE dayton.

Hahaha. Wow, big surprise, I was right.
Warren, no shots from 3.
Huelsman, 1 rebound.
You can't have the starting guard and center do that and expect to win consistently. It's recipe for disaster. And I love it.
I HATE dayton.

Any writer who bought into the early hype must also have agreed with Corey Snyder and Joe Carter on the cover of Sports Illustrated before the 1987 baseball season and the Tribe to win the World Series. Chi-Chi pick with no basis in fact.
Warren still blasts down the floor aimlessly without a clue and Hools-man is a stick strawman with no skills in the middle. The Midget is still the Midget. He didn't reincarnate into Phog Allen over the summer.
udump being at .500 or below at this point was the safest bet in the Sportsbook- if they had offered it.

They need Lowery pretty desperately I think.
I wonder, when Staten gets there next year, and it's him with Chris Johnson, Paul Williams, and Benson/Searcy/Kavanaugh (none of whom have impressed me), will they be better?

You're right about Lowery. He is the only guard they have who can create his own shot. Mickey Perry just is not a point guard. This should be a different team with Lowery, he is the only guard who can really create with a shot clock running down or the end of half situation.
Yeah, Staten will be an immediate upgrade next year. After this weekend I'm less certain about this year and more-so about the following. It will be Staten, Williams, Johnson, Fabrezius, and Searcy.
The transfer from Drake, Josh Parker will also become eligible. Even if Wright leaves (which he shouldn't) they will be much more skilled next year on the wings. C. Johnson is the best player right now.
The problem will again be inside, Benson still looks out of sorts after sitting out last year, but he is probably the most skilled big man, he just needs to get stronger.
Next year will be the first time under Gregory they should have multiple guards who are able to create off the bounce.

I think Staten will be a legit point guard. I had thought that UD would take a step back with losing a lot of seniors (Warren, Lowery, Johnson, Huelsman), but the way they are playing early, I'm not sure.
Talking to a Flyer fan today, it is really noticeable that players don't seem to get much better under Gregory. Huelsman certainly hasn't developed much as a 5 in his four years. Contrast that with, say, Jason Love, and it is really a stark difference.
Flyer 1407, do you feel like Marcus Johnson and Wright have gotten better since they got there?

Flyer 1407, do you feel like Marcus Johnson and Wright have gotten better since they got there?
I can answer that with a definitive yes. It's really not worth discussing becuase of a few down games. Those guys will be fine and put up big numbers as the year goes on.
To say players don't improve under Gregory is completely assinine. Uh, Brian Roberts anyone? Look at London Warren's play from his freshmen year to now. Chris Johnson started as a hustle leaper and in just over a year as become perhaps the best all around player on campus. The entire sophomore class, Johnson, Fabrizius, and Williams have taken big steps forward in the 18 months they've been on campus. Wright's skills have gotten a ton better, but his decision making is still his weakness. There's only so much BG can do with that...you're not going to bench the guy for long periods of time.
As a fan I'm certainly disappointed with the 2 losses, but not so much that I'm throwing my arms in the air and daydreaming of Staten. This team will be fine. No real harm was done, they just lost a couple close games to two good teams. They'll get to "incubate at UD Arena" as my guy FlyingElvis on the A10 board says, and they'll emerge better for their shortcomings in PR. I have no doubts. By the time the games against Mason and New Mexico come around, they'll be ready to perform. When January hits and Lowery is (hopefully) ready to go, that will be another bonus heading to A10. I've seen absolutely nothing that makes me believe this is anything but a team that will win 12-13 games in league play and be right there at the end in late Feb and into March.

Thats freaking awesome. I'm going to pre-order my Xavier National Championship apparel then.
Better talent returning, and a better incoming recruiting class for Xavier, and Dayton wants to talk about next year? Next year? This was the only year they were going to be 'competitive' with us. They miss there chance this year, and Mack will bring in recruiting classes that put us worlds better than the A10.

Uh, you mean the guy who either sucked or quit every time he played Xavier? I don't know about anyone else, but he looked the same to me his freshman year as he did his senior year: Mediocre.

Naw, you can choose. Surprise me. Oh before you pick do me a favor and answer one question. Were you at the Cintas Center when Sir Brian played his final game against Xavier in Cincy? If you tell me that Roberts was better in that game than his freshman game, then you deserve to make the choice. Otherwise, you're either delusional or a homer. You pick.

I'll take that answer. It does not seem to me that bigs have been developing really well under Gregory, but maybe that's a reflection of underlying talent. Plus I don't really see the Flyers play much except against X; hence me asking the question.

I was thinking about this exchange the other day in light of the Flyers' recent woes. I have to disagree with Adam. Certainly M. Johnson has taken a step back this year. Wright has had a nice offensive game against St. Joe's, but his defense is being blamed for much of the loss even by the UD Pride folks. Rob Lowery is another who, as of this point, looks like he might not be improving. And London Warren and Huelsman seem to be the same as they were four years.
