View Full Version : Who Drives From How Far to Watch X Play?

I was driving home last night after the game and realized that I have been making the nearly four hour round trip drive to XU home games since 2001. It got me wondering how many folks drive more than an hour, one way, to watch XU play. The guys who attend games with me drive from between one hour and nearly three hours one way to watch games.

So, just out of curiosity, how many folks drive more than one hour, one way to watch XU games?

Also, for those driving more than one hour, one way into which category do you fall?
- Season ticket holder
- Non-season ticket holder seeing more than 10 games
- Non-season ticket holder seeing between 5 and 10 games
- Non-season ticket holder seeing between 1 and 5 games

Finally, from where do you drive?

When I drive home I put my cruise control on at around I-275 and leave it on for about 100 miles. So there is plenty of time for a mind to wander.

Non-season ticket holder seeing between 1 and 5 games:

I will be driving 4.5 hrs one way in January when I come up for the Rhode Island game.

I come to Cincy for 4-5 games a year from St. Louis. Usually on a weekend where I have to be in Seymour, Indiana for other business (so, not sure if that counts). Anyhow, it takes me around 6 hours. More now with the construction on I-64.

In 7 months, I finish my time with the Air Force and will be moving back home to Indiana. Then, only 1 1/2 hours to Cincy for the games. Definately will buy season tix then.

I travel all the way from Finneytown.

Down the hill into Elmwood, onto Norwood lateral off at Reading Rd.

However, last year in the snowstorm, we had to come home via 75 north to 275 west to Winton Road south. Took 1 1/2 hours and a little nerve racking but it was worth it.

Season Ticket Holder.

4 hrs (in good weather) from Springfield TN. We only make it up for weekend games and games close to a Holiday.

Spent 11 1/2 hours trying to get to Cincinnati last December 23rd (icestorm). Listenened to the pre-game, game, and post-game in the car on a 2 to 3 mile stretch of 71N south of Verona....

I usually make 1-2 trips up just for a game (my teaching schedule helps) It is 10-12 hours from Valdosta, Ga depending on traffic. I have been doing it for 6 years, only last year did I not make a game. My first year down here I left at 4 a.m. on a Saturday, drove straight to Cintas, game ended at 9, sobered up, drove to Knoxville where I slept from 4 a.m until 9 a.m, made it home in time to watch most of a Sunday 4 p.m. football game. Did something similar the next year.

I coached basketball those years, and had to be back to work on Monday. I no longer make trips like that as I seem to be rapidly aging dealing with the deep south. :)

My Dad started taking me to games in the 4th grade, It was about an hour one way from Brown County. We made the trip for every game. After my Dad got to sick to go when I was a Jr. in High School I started driving it myself. I only missed home games when in H.S. if I had a game (not often), and rarely missed before moving. I HATE not being able to go anymore, but in no way want to return home. Very soon we are going to move to Chicago, and I will again make every weekend home game--which will be nice.

I hear you on that I-64 road work. I went to Evansville, IN thrice this past year and got nailed on that all three time. Each sucessive time, I thought "They have GOT to be done by now!"

Went to St. Louis once this year to go to Six Flags St. Louis (I *AM* a coaster enthusiast afterall, hence the screen name). and the St. Louis Arch. Wore my Xavier gear to Six Flags St. Louis and was suprised at the overwhelming POSITIVE reaction I got, Xavier seems to be well respected out in St. Louis area. Rode Screamin Eagle with a cute girl in a SLU shirt. I got out of my way for A-10 inter school diplomacy :).

Anyway, we came back using I-70 to I-74, I don't know if that shaves off any time, but it surely shaved off some aggravation in not having to deal with any road work.

As to the OP: I don't qualify as I am a season ticket holder but live about 3 miles from Cintas Center.

7 - 7.5 hours one way, but I usually only make a couple games a year. Luckily I have my slingbox for the rest of the games. I'm planning on heading to Cincinnati for the Charlotte and Dayton games (provided I can land some tickets).

It takes me about 45 minutes if I walk, and about 7 minutes in the car, each way.

A lot of people from Cincinnati go to SLU and I believe there is a fair amount of people from St. Louis who go to XU. Its the Jesuit connection. They have SLU High cincy has St. X and SLU and Xavier both send their college recruiters to those high schools. Cincy and St. Louis are also similar in the all boy all girl Catholic high schools area.

Did you go through Louisville on the way there? Going through Indy is definitely quicker.

Haven't seen a home game since I graduated, only seen them @ Rose Hill and MSG since 2000. Went to the A10 finals in AC a couple years ago but for some reason Xavier was not in the finals

Oh yeah saw them @ Umass also, planning a GW trip this year

260 miles (4 hours) each way. I attend an average of 3 or 4 games per season and it's not nearly enough.

Season ticket holder.

Have drive broken down from my garage in NE Louisville to 15 minutes increments.
XU parking lot to across river
Split of 71/75
Just south of Owenton exit
Just through the Carrolton valley
LaGrange exit (birthplace of Bourbonman)
Garage

Make most games and only miss 4 to 5 a year. Yes, I'm guilty of leaving early in games of little interest when we're far ahead (for example, Sacred Heart).

I used to be a season ticket holder until we moved to St. Louis last year. Now we drive the roughly 6 hours (one way) and go to 4-5 games per year. Plus, we get to see Xavier when they come to St. Louis in February.

6 hours! Cmon!. Even mapquest says it takes a little under 6. I am leaving to go home for Thanksgiving break tomorrow and my goal every time is getting in under 5. However over the years I have averaged 5 hrs. Fastest ever I think was 4hrs 35mins but that trip I was behind some guy almost the entire way who was flying. It really isnt a bad drive but I usually leave after sitting in class all day so I just want to get back as quickly as possible.

How fast are you going? I usually set the speedometer at 5 miles over the speed limit. We are coming from the west (Des Peres). Plus, I have a 3 and a 5 year-old that usually need one quick stop for food and/or potty breaks. We usually make the drive in 5hrs 30 mins (That's usually with a 10 to 15 minute stop included). If we don't stop, it is usually 5 hrs 15 minutes.

The Illinois part of the drive sucks - extremely boring and crappy speed limit (65 mph). Once you get into Indiana it gets better. At least I-64 should be open by Dec. 7th.

Ya, I dont take any stops at all. I am a bit of a speeder too. 5 hrs and 30mins is what most people would say too probably. I also leave from midtown right near the Med Campus so I hop right on 44 and get across the bridge in no time. The Illinois part of the drive is most definitely the worst.

Hey don't forget about the other Jesuit school, De Smet.

Also you should always go through Indy, it is much faster. I can do Columbia, Mo to Cincy in about 6 1/2 to 7 hours going through Indy when I drive up for my 2-3 games a year.
