Tonight at Roger Bacon Stadium, Xavier lost to the Falcons of Notre Dame College by a score of 40-14. The injury-riddled Musketeers just could not get much going offensively in the 1st Quarter after falling behind 7-0. the Falcons scored again on a fumble recovery returned for a TD and soon X faced a 30-0 halftime deficit which reached 33-0 early in the 3rd quarter. WR Jon Deters filling for an injured Chris Greenwood at QB (after Greenwood suffered a hand injury) was able to find his cousin, Dan Deters for a 28 yard touchdown pass but the kick failed.
On the ensuing Falcons offensive series, the Muskies forced a fumnle which resulted in a 30 yard return for a touchdown by DB Andrew Bodziony. On the PAT, holder Dan Deters found TE Scott McLouglin in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it a 33-14 score.
Notre Dame College closed the scoring with a 65 yard run after a Falcon RB broke a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and the game ended 40-14. The undefeated Falcons are a NAIA varsity team that dressed 75 players for the game; and the severely depleted Mus-keteers only suited up 27 for the game.
I will save commentary for another post but suffice it to say the Muskies did not quit in this game and given the circumstances where
31% of the beginning roster did not finish the season due to injuries or attrition, the team played with a lot of heart and a 5-4 record is a very good outcome.
Congrats to Coach Powers, staff and team on a season they should be very proud of completing.
