I started watching college basketball in the mid 80's, probably around the time Villanova won it all in '85.
This will be like a blast from the past thread.
Name a player you remember. It doesn't have to be someone you liked, but just a player that you have always remembered.
How about...

No kidding. You know who else was who I will never forget:
Robert O'Kelley from Wake Forest. I swear that guy played for 8 years.
He really only was at Wake for 4 years, I would have sworn he was hurt a year or something and played 5 but I checked and only 4. He started and led Wake in scoring his freshman year though so I guess it seemed like a long time since he played such a prominent role from the start.

Gary Brell & Dean "The Dream" Meminger- Marquette. Brell looked like a drug addict- pasty white, skinny, with ridiculously curly hair. Memimger, because of his nickname.
Derrick Chevious- Mizzou- the "band aid man" Because Lord Byron Larkin schooled him and Norm Stewart in Indianapolis in 1986.
Luther Rackley- Just because. Nice guy on my Kuhlman Hall floor with Perry Ashley.
Hank Finkle- maybe the start of the udump line of stiff pivotmen- although because he was 7 feet, he got NBA drafted.
Tom Boerwinkle- Tennessee- anybody who's last name ends in "inkle" is a putz- especially if they're 7 ft. It ryhmes with "twinkle". Yeah, I know he played in the NBA too.
Simon O-Thug-liese- Dookcane- Mr. cheap shot who broke KFrey's nose.
Bob Lanier- Beacuse of his size 22 feet. Never seen anything like that on the Schmidy Fieldhouse floor.

Larry Bird, Indiana State
Magic Johnson, Michigan State
Wally Szczerbiak, Miami University.
Michael Jordan, North Carolina
James Worthy, North Carolina
Karl Malone, One of the Louisiana East, west, north south etc
Keith Lee, Memphis
Pat Cummings, UC
Steve Alford, Indiana
Charles Barkley, Auburn
Purvis Ellison, Louisville
I was fortunate to have covered games involving all of those players. Magic was one of the most cooperative athletes I ever interviewed. Alford was the best pure shooter I have ever watched until Brad Redford came along.
Barkley was a freak of nature and a fun guy to talk to, however briefly.'
Robinson was the most respectful player I have ever talked to. When you're a lowly reporter and a guy that big keeps calling you sir, it tends to shake you.
All time favorite coaches: Pete Gillen, Charley Coles, Dale Brown, Bob Knight, Denny Crum and John Thompson. With Knight and Thompson you had to ask a question and not just toss out a "Your thoughts, coach?"
I did a feature story interview with John Wooden but never had the privilege of covering one of his games. Damn I was lucky.:D:D:D

Fly Williams- now there's a name from the past. Now could anyone explain how he ended up at Austin Peay? my recollection is that he was a pretty big recruit.
P.S. After writing the above, I did a little internet reading on Fly. He was recruited by a young Austin Peay assistant named Leonard Hamilton.

Harold Miner aka Baby Jordan (USC)
Eddie House (ASU) - I remember watching a game where he dropped something like 60 points on his opponent.
Laettner/Hurley (Duke) - Hated them but respected the way they played the game
Larry Johnson (UNLV) - Just remember how dominant that team was and how they seemed to win every game by 30.
Lenny Brown (Xavier) - I had just started my college search process and had Xavier on my list, even though I still didn't know much about the university. I'll never forget watching him drop that shot on #1 UC to win the game. A year and a half later I would enroll as a freshman at X.
Tyus Edny/Ed O'Bannon (UCLA) - Just remember them playing so well winning a national championship in the mid-90s

UC's Big O and Bill Wiesenhahn
MU's Wayne Embry and Charlie Coles
U of L's Charlie Tyra and Ron Rooks (Mt. Healthy)

I also liked Hal Greer, Leo Byrd, Ralph Crosswaite, Joe Viviano, Steve Thomas, Bob Pelkington, the St. John's lefty (Chris Mullen?), Tom and Sam Stith, Bob Petit, The phenom from Rio Grande College (Bevo Francis), etc.
Coaches: UD's Tom Blackburn, St. John's Louie Carneseca, Marquette's Al McGuire, Detroit's Dick Vitale, U of L's Peck Hickman, Western KY's 50-year coach Eddie Diddle, UCLA's John Wooden, and Texas Western's Don Haskins for his guts and wiles.
My two favorite all-time Muskies' coaches were Ned Wulk and Bob Staak (Wulk for doing the most with the least and Staak for being the right guy at the right time for Xavier).

University of New Orleans' Ervin Johnson. After working in a Baton Rouge supermarket for almost three years, Johnson played basketball at the University of New Orleans under coach Tim Floyd. When I was 11, I went to Pittsburgh for the McDonald's All American game to watch Jason Collier, a family friend. He took my friend and me to a player dinner. Great class. Collier, Richard Hamilton, Kobe, Jermaine O'neal, Ed Cota, Vasil Etimov, Nate James, Loren Woods, Stephen Jackson, Corey Benjamin, Tim Thomas, Mike Bibby, Mateen Cleaves. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Chris Smith(LSU later known as Mahammad Abdoul Ralf)
That was Chris Jackson. Played at LSU with the twin towers. A little known frosh named Shaquille O'Neal and Stanley Roberts. I saw Shaq's first SEC game at Vandy. They were incredible. They totally shut down Vandy's big Will Perdue.
I had a buddy play for UK and went to visit him at the Wildcat Lodge. While I was there UK's two guard Dale Brown played a VHS tape of him vs. Chris in the Mississippi HS State Championship game. It was incredible as those two traded buckets all night.
As for Fly Williams, there are some great stories about him at Austin Peay and their gym at the time which was called "The Little Red Barn". The late Lake Kelly took a chance on him and had Leonard recruit him from the streets of NY. There are videos of people talking about NY street ball and "The World" and Fly would take games over. He was Jordan before Jordan but didn't have a clear head on his shoulders.
Good memories. Thanks for the trip...
