NCDS: Pat Kelsey, Assoc. Head Coach - Xavier
By: Pat Kelsey, Assoc. Head Coach - Xavier University
After doing things a certain way for eight-plus years, change can be a major adjustment. At Wake Forest since May of 2001, I was accustomed to a certain "way". The newness of the "Xavier Way" has been an adjustment but, as a Xavier graduate, also a blast of nostalgia!
Last Monday was our first game (exhibition) of the season. The timing of the day from the office, shoot-around, meal, pre-game preparations and finally tip-off left my head spinning because it was so different. I could go through a game-day with my eyes closed in Winston-Salem because I went through about two hundred and fifty over eight seasons. If anything remained a constant it was the organization and the daily regiment. Coach Mack, like Coach Prosser and Coach Gaudio, is extraordinarily organized.
At the end of the day, it was a very exciting and emotional 24 hours for me and for Coach Mack. The excitement for me of being back at Xavier as well as Coach Mack's first game as the head coach at our alma mater was awesome. My father wore the Xavier uniform in the early seventies and my mentor in this business and the man who gave me "my foot in the door," Coach Skip Prosser, roamed the same sidelines that Chris and I did Monday night. To top it all off, Monday night (November 3rd) was Coach Prosser's birthday. A neat and ironic twist to a wonderful day in my life! Man, we miss him!
