Five Questions: GW Asst. Coach Greg Collucci

As the offseason series ‘Five Questions’ nears completion, College Chalktalk catches up with George Washington assistant coach Greg Collucci. A former guard for the Colonials, Collucci enters his fourth season as an assistant alongside Karl Hobbs.

College Chalktalk: Briefly describe your newcomers (positions, skill sets, etc.)
Greg Collucci: This is a very large and diverse freshman class from a basketball standpoint.

To begin, Bryan Bynes is a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Boyd Anderson high school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is an extremely gifted athlete, with tremendous upside and an ability to create for teammates and is a solid three-point shooter.

Tim Johnson is another 6-foot-3 combo guard from Chicago, Illinois, via Lee Academy in Lee, Maine. We expect Tim to be able to score in multiple ways. He is an athletic slasher, and a very good worker on the defensive end of the floor. Hopefully, Tim will be able to get in the lane and create opportunities for his teammates.

Dwayne Smith is a 6-foot-6 swing forward from Toronto, Canada, via Bridgton Academy in Maine. Dwayne is a mature athlete with many physical gifts. He can use his body to score in the lane, and hopefully he will be able to rebound on both the offensive and defensive end.

Daymon Warren is a 6-foot-9 five man from Oakland, California, via Worcester Academy in Massachusetts. He will provide size and an ability to be physical on the block, and has the potential to be a defensive stopper.

David Pellom is a 6-foot-8 swing forward from Wilmington, North Carolina, via Charis Prep in Wilson, North Carolina. David can face up from the three-point line. He has an excellent skill set and has the talent to put the basketball on the floor and get to the rim. David will be a solid player in the years to come.

Last, but not least, Lasan Kromah is a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. Lasan is a very skilled offensive player who can shoot the three-point shot effectively and can put the ball on the floor to get his own shot.

We look forward to great things from this enthusiastic, athletic, and fun group of freshmen.

CCT: Rob Diggs, the team’s only proven weapon on the interior last season, has graduated. Who do you anticipate can help to fill this void and provide some productivity on the blocks?

GC: Replacing Rob Diggs will be done by committee. David Pellom, Dwayne Smith, and upperclassmen Joseph Katuka, Jabari Edwards, and Hermann Opoku, will all have to contribute in order to fill the void left by Diggs’ departure. We will have to find ways to get the basketball inside and hopefully our players will provide a physical nature on the offensive and defensive backboards.

CCT: Tony Taylor enters this season with increased experience and confidence. What do you expect from your second-year floor general?

GC: Tony has had a very productive off-season. He went through a lot of the natural growing pains of any freshman point guard at this level. We expect his experiences last year, and his hard work this off-season will provide a solid setup to a successful sophomore campaign for Tony. He is a great kid and he is eager to get on the floor and have a great year.

CCT: Talk a little about your non-conference schedule which includes a visit to the Smith Center by the Oregon State Beavers of the PAC-10. How do you feel it positions your team for Atlantic 10 play?

GC: Our non-conference schedule is going to be a great test for our team. We have home games against a PAC-10 team, a Big East team, and traditional powers in the Ivy League, Colonial, and America East Conferences. The area audience should have great interest in our game versus George Mason, obviously a power in the CAA and nationally. In addition, being able to host a team of the quality of Oregon State is a rarity for our program, and hopefully we can compete at a high level and provide a great matchup for Coach Craig Robinson’s basketball club.

CCT: Your preseason All-Conference first team?

GC: Wow, so many to choose from. Chris Wright from Dayton, Lavoy Allen from Temple, Rodney Green from LaSalle, Bill Clark from Duquesne, and Dijuan Harris from Charlotte.
