Who has to go to the games with recaps as good as you provide! Thanks much, Nick, and keep up the good work. Muskies seem like they might be on the way to another fine season.

Muskie Nick:

Updates are fine but quite honestly the play of the Xavier team is really fun to watch. Jon Deters first TD catch yesterday was a one-handed beauty in the corner of the end zone that most of the XU team thought was overthrown. As good of a catch as you will ever see. His other two catches were neat to watch. Phil Migitz' one-handed interception at mid-field thwarted a Hanover drive and like the Deters' catch, words don't do it justice.

I cannot emphasize enough how hard these Muskie players play. CJ Moreland's runs are all hard nosed and QB Chris Greenwood's hard tackle of a Hanover DB who had intercepted his pass not only saved a TD but had me thinking Greenwood would be a darn good DB as well. Dan Deters' speed and excellent hands mark him as one of XU's best receivers ever. The entire defense is a joy to watch as well; they hit hard and make some great stops.

Anyway, I really hope that people come out to support the team as it continues to play entertaining and very good football.

Review from coach Powers:

Dear Friends of the Program:

Another good day for MUSKETEER FOOTBALL!!! The sun came out on an overcast day just as the Muskies scored their final TD and closed out a well-deserved cvictory over the Hanover College (JV) Panthers. The momentum was all in XU's favor as they were driving for a score that would have put them up 30-7 early in the 4th quarter, but a turnover resulting in a Hanover TD caused things to be extra exciting during the last 10 minutes of the game. Twice late in the 4th the Muskie defense thwarted Panther drives (that could have tied the game at 23-23) but after a 63 yard INT return by Kevin Tierney, XU punched it in from the one yard line to slam the door on any Panther hopes of a comeback.

1 2 3 4 Total
Hanover College (JV) 7 0 0 8 15
XAVIER MUSKETEERS 0 10 13 7 30

Scoring
HC 35 yard TD pass (kick good)
XU Manze 35 yard FG
XU J. Deters 23 yard pass from Greenwood (Manze kick)
XU J. Deters 61 yard pass from Greenwood (Manze kick)
XU J. Deters 21 yard pass from Greenwood (kick failed)
HC 10 yard TD pass (2 pt. pass good)
XU Greenwood 1 yard run (Manze kick)

Xavier (2 - 0; 1 - 0 MCFC)

The MUSKETEERS next travel to Oxford, OH to battle the Redhawks of Miami on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Kickoff is at 11:00am.

The Panthers of Hanover College unleashed some early thunder connecting on a 35 yard flea-flicker less than 4 minutes into the game. Xavier's defense steadied and the offense got on tract mid-way through the first quarter.

The Muskie defense forced 7 Panther turnovers, several of which happened in the XU Redzone. LB Brett Hoyer led the XU defense with 2 INTs, along with LB Phil MIgitz (INT, 1 sack, 7 tackles); DBs David Pergolini (8 tackles, 3 pass break-ups, and a caused fumble); DB Eric Miles (5 tackles, 1 fumble recovery); LB Kevin Tierney (INT, 5 tackles, caused fumble); and fumble recoveries by DL Jim Heinmiller and LB Trent Eckle.

The receiving corps of cousins Jon Deters and Dan Deters had another fantastic day. Jon had 8 catches for 148 yards and 3 TDs, while Dan had 6 catches for 89 yards. QB Chris Greenwood was 16/30 for 252 yards, 3 TDs. The rnning game improved significantly over last week's performance with several runs, getting key first downs in the second half, by C.J. Moreland and Jimmy Castrigano.

The MUSKETEERS travel to hostile territory for an MCFC battle with the Miami Redhawks next Sunday (October 4th) for a 11:00am kick-off. Hope to see you there!

Have a great day !!
