I believe this is the Coach who Mack had the problem with at Evansville.

That is correct.
Jim Crews was the coach at Evansville when X was in the MCC. He was a Bobby Knight disciple - he played for Knight at Indiana.

Odd time of year to be firing a coach.

Crews has had a strange career. He went to Evansville and was pretty succcessful and I always thought he was headed to a big name job, which never happened. Instead, after a long tenure at Evansville, he goes to Army, which was basically a step down.

yeah, very strange. X had a great rivalry with them. Anybody have information on what went wrong at Evansville?
Edit: so he apparently left evansville a while back. The coach following Crews struggled.

Someone told me that Evansville scaled back with the basketball team due to financial problems. I don't think Crews did much his last few years there.

Evansville died when they took away the full shirt uniforms.
Crews is a jackass. Someone that orders a player to intentionally slam a ball into a player's face not once, but twice, is not someone that you want leading your program.

Crews is a Bobby Knight disciple. Same jerk-factor applies.
He did have Evansville rolling for a while, but who knows what happens. Just plain burn-out probably. Maybe he mis-treated a player with this kind of timing?
Crews pretty much had Knight's same jackass personality, it was ok with the locals as long as he was winning, but once his teams became ordinary the they had had enough. Plus Bruce Pearl was across town at USI, and was winning National Championships. Evansville is a large "small town", and he probably tired of being under the microscope.

As I recall, Evansville left the MCC to go to the MVC, and it was supposed to be a big step up, but instead, they were never heard from again.
I also heard that Evansville had money problems -- I think I saw that on the Butler board.

The Evansville Athletic Department has definitely had money problems the past decade or so. they've eliminated several sports.
