Statistical Analysis: Team Pace

LYNDHURST, NJ - Along with the type of game a team prefers to play (See Perimeter or Paint), the pace at which a game is played can also be important to team success. If the team is one which prefers uptempo but is lured into a walk it up the floor affair, adjustments will quickly need to be made. On the flip side, a deliberate team will take precautions against becoming induced into accelerating its attack when it prepares to face an uptempo club.

In this piece, the average pace (possessions) per game of Atlantic 10 teams for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons is examined. Possessions are calculated as follows:

Field Goal Att + (Free Throw Att * .475) + turnovers - offensive rebounds

In A-10 games last season, St. Bonaventure led the way with a 73 possession per game average. Of little surprise, the most deliberate team - for the second straight year - was Saint Louis which averaged just 62 possessions per contest. Once again, only conference games are factored into the analysis.

if Redford took all the shots and hit 88.5% (based on 100 made out of 113), we will score 180 ppg this year.
