Statistical Analysis: Perimeter or Paint?

LYNDHURST, NJ - About two years ago, Ken Pomeroy introduced a formula to distinguish playing styles. Simply put, the formula provides a look at whether a team is perimeter or paint oriented.

100 * (FTA-3FGA)/FGA

The goal was to obtain insight on the individual’s style of play. A positive number meant one had more of an inside game, less three point attempts and more trips to the line. Negative numbers suggested a perimeter oriented game; 15 footers and three point attempts coupled with fewer penetrations and trips to the charity stripe. “Kenpom” introduced his metric for the 2007 Big 12 preview, applying it to players.

Below is the formula as applied to Atlantic 10 teams for the 2008-09 season. Again, only regular season conference games are included in the calculation. While the figures are lower when applied to teams than individuals - understandable because a team has members with varying styles - these numbers provide a glimpse into each respective team’s tendency.

Saint Joseph’s 17.17
Dayton 15.65
Saint Louis 10.14
St. Bonaventure 8.10

Xavier 4.36

So a number closer to zero would imply a more balanced attack, one that does not rely predominantly on an inside game or a perimeter game. I like the fact that we are pretty close to zero because it also implies that we are a harder team to defend.....stop the outside game, and we will go inside, etc.

Christ, then look out for Fordham. The new favorite for the league title with such a balanced attack. That white goon off theirs looks to make a run at offensive player of the year this year. So much for 4 in a row for us...

I would expect St. Joseph's number to fall dramatically with Nivins gone. And Dayton's high number indicates that even they knew they couldn't shoot worth sh** from outside. I agree with cub's statement that our number indicates we are harder to guard because we were well-balanced between interior and outside scoring.

And, tmac, that's not likely to change in this year's version of the Muskies. Sure, we lose BJ. But from what I have seen and heard about Crawford and the experience gained by Redford and Holloway, our outside shooting may get even better. The inside game should not suffer a bit with Frease having a year under his belt, McLean taking the reins from Anderson, Dante working into the 3, and Love hitting full stride in the post as a senior.
