I am going to have an afternoon and evening to kill in Boston next week. I have a Thursday morning meeting and am arriving Wednesday at 1 at Logan.

I am actually going to be staying in the Taunton/Raynham area, but I figured that I would spend the day checking out Boston before heading to the hotel.

I haven't been to Boston before. Is there anything especially cool to do to kill a few hours during the afternoon?

Also, I am thinking about getting a bite to eat somewhere in the Taunton/Raynham/Lakeville area. I love seafood. Does anybody have any suggestions?

There's always Bull and Finch pub - more affectionately known as the Cheers Bar.

Yeah, I thought about that. Having a drink at 'the Cheers bar' definitely makes the list. It is somewhere downtown I assume?

A while back I took a tour of Fenway which was great. I highly recommend it if they still offer it.

Outside of that, Boston is a great city to walk around and explore.

2 food recommendations in Boston: 1.) Legal Seafood is a must. I have never known anyone to walk away unhappy. There are several throughout the Boston area. 2.) Michael's Pastry. Near Paul Revere's home and the old church. In an Italian food district, so there are probably some good restaurants there as well. Michaels has the best cannolis you will ever eat.

Do the freedom trail

This. Faneuil Hall, the Old North Church, the tombs of Revere and Adams and so forth. And there's bars all around if you need to quench your thirst.

Grab all the lobster you can, super low prices. If you can't find it cheap in town, just hit the road, a few hours north and a lobster dinner can be had in the 10 buck range in Maine.

My brother lives near Boston (Northboro) and whenever I go visit him and his family, we always head to Boston. Definitely Paul Revere home and the church he used to notified the people are cool. The Italian restaurants in the area are great to eat in. I also loved the JFK Library (other end of Boston near the harbor). If you were going to stay longer I would suggest the boat ride around the harbor or going on the whale watching boat (which will be the next time I go out there). Really just walking the downtown streets especially the north end is very cool....

Legal Seafood and Mike's Pastries are terribly overrated. Go to Atlantic Fish on Boylston (right across from the Prudential Center) instead. Afterwards, walk to Ben & Jerry's on Newbury Street. Sure, Ben & Jerry's is a chain you can get anywhere, but the dessert will taste better and you can take a walk down Newbury Street with all its fancy stores full of stuff you can't afford.

And I would avoid Cheers at all costs. Walk past it on Comm. Ave. next to Boston Common and take a picture of the outside, but don't bother to go in. The only charming part is the outside. There are a hundred better bars in Boston. In that neighborhood (Beacon Hill), I'd go with the Hill Tavern.

Well, unfortunately I didn't have as much time in downtown Boston as I thought. Still, it is probably the coolest downtown I have seen (I have not been to NYC). The history there is really cool. I walked part of the freedom trail and saw Boston Commons at the State House. I had a pint in a small Irish Pub (Emmets on Beacon) and got the heck out of downtown before rush hour. Traffic leaving downtown was still pretty bad at 3:30, I'm sure it would have been terrible at 5.

I will definitely have to make a return trip with at least a one night stay in the city, though.

Hound, on your return trip, if you enjoy history at all, it's a wonderful city. Also get out on the downtown area to Minuteman Park, Quincy area for Adams history and more. Spend a couple of days if you like history. Yet, skip Plymouth and Salem, IMO. Others on this board know more, but from someone from the outside (me) and loves history (me again), Boston is huge.

Skip Salem, huh? I always thought that Salem would be really cool, what with the witch trials and all.

On an unrelated note, I just got back from dinner. Fried Clams at the Stoneforge. You just don't have access to clams this good in the midwest. Phenomenal.

I spent an afternoon in Salem on my way from Boston to Maine and loved it. It was a perfect day, weather-wise, which always impacts my perception, but I thought it was a cool town.

Could someone elaborate on this tollboth willy character? Is this a real guy, or someone from a movie. Sounds funnier than shit, but I am not sure if the dude is for real or part of a comedy act.

It was a character from a skit on one of Adam Sandler's early comedy CD's. The whole disk is pretty funny, and definitely worth a listen.
