Flyers release schedule; fewer home games planned
By Doug Harris, Staff Writer

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team will play just 16 home games this season, its fewest since 2004-05, and UD athletic director Tim Wabler said that number could shrink even more in the future.

The Flyers released their non-conference schedule today and have dicey games on the road against George Mason, Miami and New Mexico (on New Year’s Day) and also likely will meet two BCS teams in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Classic, whose field includes Final Four participant Villanova, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas State and Ole Miss.

The highlights of the home schedule include a Nov. 14 opener against defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Creighton and Old Dominion, which returns its top five scorers from a team that went 25-10 last season.

Wabler said the dwindling number of NCAA at-large berths being allotted to non-BCS schools have compelled the Flyers to test themselves more.

Just four teams outside the six power conferences — Dayton, Butler, Xavier and BYU — earned at-large bids last year after 12 made the field in 2004. The Flyers were a perfect 18-0 at home last season and played 17 games at UD Arena in each of the three seasons before that.

“If the NCAA continues to go in the direction it’s going with the selections, then you have to do this,” Wabler said.

“It’d be a hit (financially to cut more home games). That’s why we’re not jumping to do that right away. I’m not saying the decision has been made, but the pressure is on to do that.”

Dayton can play whoever they want, but if I was a UD fan, I would be disappointed by that schedule.

I don't know what the bracket for the PR Classic looks like, but getting a win over Villanova would be good for them. Other than that tournament, their schedule is mediocre. Creighton and New Mexico are the only good teams on it. George Mason and Miami are decent. None will help RPI other than Nova, Creighton (maybe), and Georgia Tech (maybe). In a straight-up comparison to XU's non-conference sched, it fails.

That is a weak weak OOC schedule for a team thats predicted to win the A10 and make a dent in the NCAA tourney

If they make it through this stretch of their schedule with a 2-2 record, they should be proud. Talk about a gauntlet.

Holy crap that would be an awesome 4 home games, why can't we schedule such college powers?

I find it strange that UD has two teams on the schedule (George Mason and Boston University) that are also playing in the Puerto Rico tournament. Theoretically they could end up playing both teams twice, which is completely bizarre.

I think ATF said that UD is supposed to play Georgia Tech in the first round, which is a nice draw. Obviously if they win and get a game with Villanova that will help them win or lose, in much the same way XU's matchup with Memphis boosted our SOS last year.

The rest of their non-conference schedule is pretty poor, though.

Is THAT the schedule that Adam was bragging about? If this were Xavier's schedule, we'd be pissed off that we're playing all these cupcakes.

Those games will be especially heated because of the recruiting battles UD gets in with those schools.

Of course season tickets were like a buck and a half at the time, and gallons of Hudepohl could be purchased at the concession stand for a nickel.

That's the best part about this article. Test themselves? Against who? Appalachian State and Presbyterian College?

I said in another thread that daytons OOC schedule would be proven to be a joke, and it has come to fruition. If a team, ANY team, that is supposedly the favorite to win this conference, and supposedly a top 25 team too, comes out with that schedule, they should be ashamed.

It's pathetic. Just wait though, if dayton goes undefeated at home in their OOC schedule(which I doubt will happen), their fans will harp on it like it's such a huge accomplishment.

It's a laughable schedule, and I expect some dayton fans will rationalize it away, as if they couldn't get a more difficult schedule.

I HATE dayton.

They better be careful with Boston U. They have stated their desire to become the next Xavier.

I'm sure there is someone out there who wishes to be the next Dayton.

Ha, who am I kidding?

If Dayton goes 1-2 in the PR tournament, anything less than A-10 domination will spell NIT for the Cryers

BU does have that one kid who was good enough to transfer to Xavier. That alone makes Dayton the underdog there.

Everytime I visit the UD board, I'm always surprised to hear the talk about Brian Gregory bolting for a BCS conference school.

I get the feeling that I respect the UD program more than UD fans do. UD has a lot going for themselves. They should expect NCAA tourney bids at least every 2 out of 3 years. Making it to the 2nd round shouldn't be a cause for such celebration and fear that Gregory will bolt.

To be blunt, looking at the totality of Gregory's career, he's performed subpar for the job he has.

I understand that Gregory is a nice guy and he always says the right things. But still, UD fans should expect more from their coach and program.

Two words- George Washington.

A few years ago, GW had the piece of cake schedule with a pretty decent team. They barely received an NCAA bid with a lousy seed and went no where.

In that path go the cryers.

To get better, and discover your deficiencies, you need to test yourself against quality competition. udump refuses to do that.

Way to pad the stats, midget.

If UD gets three wins in PR against BCS teams that stretch won't matter a great deal. The PR tournament is going to define their season, because if they screw it up they will not have much chance to make things right...

Not only weak, but very sad. So much for challenging your team to get better. Shows the difference between a team that says it wants to be a better program vs the school that actuall goes out and takes the steps to becoming a better program.

That's embarrasing.

You have to hand it to Piper up there in Dayton. Guy is able to bring in some talent selling those kids that they get to be on the floor at the same time as NBA draft pick Derrick Brown, 3 time A-10 Champion Jason Love and the guy who dunked on LeBron.

Cause he's about reeling in as much talent as I do with that non conference schedule.

i think creighton and old dominion will be ncaa teams next year, or at the very least solidly in the discussion. old dominion was really looking good down the stretch, and they return all five starters. they're kind of at the top of their talent cycle right now, especially if they are able to stay healthy.

the puerto rico shootout has some pretty good teams in it as well.

new mexio and george mason should be decent. george mason had a good recruiting class and they do have some decent players coming back, but i don't think they're an at-large caliber team just yet. new mexico lost their top three scorers and will probably be doing some rebuilding.

i don't think the schedule is all that awful. it doesn't have any games that jump out at you like xavier's does, but it isn't so bad that they won't be able to make a strong case for an at-large bid and a good seed. it's a ton better than the schedule they played last year.
