I seriously doubt Juwan Staten leaves Dayton.

West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Ohio State are still pursuing him. Huggins, Cronin, and Matta - sounds about right.

I think we can all agree that nothing is certain in life - especially when we're talking about an 17/18 year old kid.

well with Dayton already be crowned the A10 Champs for the 2009-10 season on paper, they will lose their coach to a big name team (Evansville, Troy, etc, etc) so then he will back out of going to UD, maybe to join the midgets new team...you know how it happens...

There's nothing illegal about still recruiting him, as far as I know, so I don't know why the Dayton writer makes it out like Matta and the others are super villains.

Now the question is: who do you believe? Brian Snow or DDN? Brian Snow has reported on Dayton Rivals no less then 6 times that he knows for a fact that OSU is not pursuing JS because "college coaches just don't do that". Well, we all got a good laugh on that one because it's quite shocking that Snow would be the only one, especially as close as he is to these kids, who doesn't think this...it's a Matta, Calipari, Huggins staple...they just don't care, win at all cost.

Now, as a UD fan this doesn't worry me in the least. IF, JS and his parents are to be believed, he's coming to UD...his father was quoted as saying that they wouldn't let him go to Oak Hill if he didn't follow up on his committment to UD. Besides, all these schools went after him already and he chose UD over them...nothing has changed. I'll be worried if the Dukes, UConns and UNCs coming calling but until then....WVU, OSU, ect all had their chance with him and he said no thanks.

I'm not saying it with certainty, it's just my guess.

Juwan Staten is very likely not leaving Dayton...unless Gregory does (ha...I just made myself laugh).

And I would put way more stock in Brian Snow than the DDN. The DDN article's headline was pretty misleading, with the substance of the article itself didn't indicate anything beyond some ribbing between AAU teammates.

Well I don't trust anything that comes out of Dayton, so I'm going to stick with Snow on this one.

I look forward to the Staten-Kavanaugh tandem attempting to replace the greatness that is the Warren-Huelsman combo.

Just kidding before I get 500 links about how great of a HS player Staten is.

I agree on trusting Snow, but honestly it wouldn't be suprised me in the least if OSU was still recruiting him. After all, Matta still pursued Aaron Craft while he was committed to Tennessee. Either way, I'm sure their are other schools and not just OSU still trying to get Staten to de-commit.

I still think he is solid to Dayton. I hope he doesn't de-commit because we need as much talent in the A10 as we can get.

Well, according to a poster on the UD Rivals site, Staten was wearing a "Dayton" t-shirt the entire time he was at the Peach Jam this week. I'm sure people are still talking to him, it happens everywhere, but I think Staten is a pretty solid Dayton commit. He was texting Berry and Spearman to join him all along, and is constantly in Payne's ear about staying home at UD.

People put way too much into the "pied piper" effect, like if recruit X and recruit Y stay on recruit Z, they can convince him to go where they're going. Even if Sullinger and Staten have a good relationship, Juwan is going to go where he wants to go, whether it's Dayton, Ohio State or wherever.

Players are going to make decisions based on what's best for them. And they have to be selfish in this decision, or else they'll be miserable. In Staten's case, if Sullinger could actually convince him to go to Ohio State, Staten obviously wasn't all that sold on Dayton. But in reality, that's not at all the case. Prep teammates just don't convince each other to follow them to a certain school. It doesn't work that way. That's why I found that article so laughable. Talk about creating a story where there isn't one.

I agree, it must be a slow day for Dayton news. On a side note Dayton landed a talented top 100 SG out of Chicago named Brandon Spearman. BG is putting together a pretty good class for the Cryers. I know Xavier would have put the full court press on Spearman had we needed a SG in the 2010 class, but he just didn't fill a need. Snow says Spearman plays a lot like Dante and is guy that makes his teammates better.

Ugh. This is not a "Snow vs ddn" thing, because the two concepts are wholly separate from one another. Per the ddn article, it's about two kids talking to one another, no where, NO WHERE does it say that any coach is the one trying to talk a kid into decommitting. So your entire premise is incorrect. It's the author of that article who is making the assumption, with absolutely no proof whatsoever mind you, that tOSU or any other program is the driving force behind players talking to one another about their commitments. Hell, even the writer said that Staten does the same thing himself. Does that mean that the midget is pulling his strings too?

I HATE dayton.

"Staten admitted last spring that regardless of his UD commitment, schools like West Virginia, Cincinnati and especially Ohio State were still vigorously recruiting him."

I highly doubt that means that other high school players are doing the recruiting. So no, my entire premise isn't incorrect. Now maybe Staten himself is full of crap when he says this...who knows. But it's safe to say, if the rumors are true, then coaches from these schools are involved. Does that make it any sort of violation? Of course not, and no one is saying it is. I just think Snow may be a little blind if he really thinks this stuff doesn't go on, whether it really is in this case or not......

I would take the word of someone like Brian Snow over that of any recruit any day. One individual has reason to "embellish", the other doesn't. Recruits sometimes like to dick around with the media, say they're looking at certain schools when they're not, say they've been hearing from a certain school when they haven't, or say a certain school has offered them when it hasn't. Maybe OSU, WVU and UC have said "Hey, Juwan, if you change your mind, we'll have a spot for you" or "we really like what you can do, call us if you're interested". That doesn't really equate to "vigorous recruiting". Or maybe even Juwan told the reporter he was still getting contact from OSU, WVU and UC, and the reporter wrote down "vigorously recruited by..."

You just have to consider the source in these circumstances. And recruits will often lie. They're kids. The spotlight is on them, so they may embellish to make themselves sound better or increase the attention. It's tough to blame them.

I don't really disagree with what you've said, but I think there allot of basketball fans, in the X camp also, who feel that certain coaches, aren't some of "the good guys" out there. I think most are decent human beings and once a guy verbals, they leave the kid alone, but there are coaches out there who will continue to recruit even after a verbal. No, it's not a violation, but probably a little unethical.

I'm not saying the DDN is right, but this isn't the first time this has come up with JS and OSU. I would hope and I personally believe that Snow has much more "know" in this field then the DDN does.
