Florida sophomore Alex Tyus is transferring, an SEC source told CBSSports.com on Frirday morning.

An official announcement is expected later Friday.

A 6-foot-8 forward, Tyus averaged 12.5 points (second on the team) and 6.7 rebounds (first on the team) for the Gators this season. His departure likely means Billy Donovan will have to avoid a third consecutive NIT without the luxury of his top two scorers considering Nick Calathes has declared for early entry into the NBA Draft.

Calathes hasn't hired an agent and could return to school, if he chooses.

However, industry sources believe the point guard has more than likely played his final game in college.

Don't know if we would have a shot at him but sounds like he might be a good fit for X.

I just scanned the post, but I didn't see the fact that he attended Harmony Prep mentioned, can't hurt, if there is even remote interest from either side.

No indication of who he is looking at but seems like it would be nice to get him especially if we can't get latham and witherspoon to recommit... he was Florida's second leading scorer

got this from fox sports

TYUS TRANSFERRING

There's a revamping going on down in Gainesville.

The latest is that sophomore forward Alex Tyus is transferring. The 6-foot-8 Tyus made the decision shortly after another Gators frontcourt player, Allan Chaney, decided to transfer.

Tyus averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, but it's not as if he can't be replaced. He did it for an NIT team.

According to sources, it was a mutual decision. Tyus wanted to play on the perimeter while Florida coach Billy Donovan needed him in the paint.

I don't recall Alex being a local high school hoopster. Where did he go to high school?

Nevermind Cle.....I looked it up myself. He apparently just passed through Harmony like so many others and it appears that St.Louis is his hometown. Saw on a Florida blog someone comment that Alex loved his girlfriend more than basketball and was going to California to be with her.

Thats ALWAYS the right decision...

Then again, I am not in the palce to judge. One should follow their passion and their love throughout life is possible, right? Though, it's sometimes unwise to follow something so fickle like a relationship.

Maybe Holloway can have some sway with this kid?

given BJ's Banquet speech and the above posts, let's hope not

Billy D seems to pissing a lot of his players off for whatever reason. Alex was the #2 scorer and the rumor is Nick is not coming back if he makes the NBA or not.

I'd guess Mizzou, Arizona and X. Mack needs to get some frequent flier miles.

I would think we might have a better chance with Chaney. He seems to be more of post player than Tyus and was rated top 100 in class of 2008. With all the good prep talent leaning elsewhere this spring a D1 transfer to fill out the roster is a very real possibility.

Reasoning behind this, or just a guess?

Just a wild guess....grew up in St Louis, was recruited by Zona and played for Harmony.

FYI - Tyus is apparently going to stay at Florida now.

(With the ability to be so indecisive, this kid is a head coach in the making!)

I hope Parrom does the same.
