Ohio State expects to forfeit one men's basketball scholarship for next season. It is not certain yet whether it will have to give up a second.
The athletic department is awaiting word from the NCAA on the results of the latest Academic Progress Rate, which will not be announced publicly until May but is expected to be provided shortly to schools.
"It could be one, it could be two," John Bruno, the university's faculty athletics representative, said of the scholarship penalty.

If you read the article the loss of scholarships is because the player didn't withdraw at the right time. What a slap in the face to the school.

Hence one of the reasons why Oh-ho-ho State now wants to go to semesters rather than quarters.
Whatever. Beaknose is paying the price for the quick fix. "Student- Athlete" is a rumor around Columbus.

Actually osu doesn't really want to go to semesters but becuase of pressure from the Chancellor and the Governor to support their Univerity System of Ohio, they are most likely giving in. They stand to lose out on a lot of State $$$ if they don't play along.
With that said, the move to semesters probably will help them with academics in relation to athletics.

UC made the change, so if a school as dumb as them can figure it out, OSU should be able to.
The quarter system is really, really stupid.
This is an extremely good thing for us. It should give us a better shot at Weatherspoon.

Unfortunately it doesn't have much of an effect; they would lose the scholarship (or two) in 09-10, and be back at full strength for 2010-11, Spoon's first year. They currently have 2 scholarships open with Mullens' departure, so it mostly prevents them from picking up a transfer.
Unless this same situation happens again next year (and it certainly could) there's not a whole lot of damage to OSU.

Well, it absolutely will. Evan Turner- Gone after next season as a Junior. Won't graduate, unless he's taking bunches of classes in the summer.
Beaknose is doing quite a job of managing that roster.
