Seriously, the guy hasn't thrown a pigskin in 4+ years. Isn't 6'1" a little short for an NFL QB? The days of Flutie are gone.

I'm guessing the current QB is loving this crap.

Paulus should have played both sports. He had offers from several schools to play both. 6'1 is a little small for a QB but he should have realized there is even less of a chance for a 6'1 white PG to play professionally.

Of course if he just wanted to play the sport he liked more and didnt plan to make a career out of either then do whatever. Its not what that looks like though.

6'1" seems fine to me. Drew Brees is only 6' even.

He can flop in that sport, too

Ya thats true. QB's do seem to be getting taller thought these days. Maybe not though. Its definitely not as big a deal as in basketball.

I'm from Central NY, and got to see him play a couple times at CBA. He was a stud. Taking 4 years off to play hoops has got to take a toll though.

I think I remember reading an article about Greg Paulus and how he had a much better chance to succeed with football as his primary sport but he always wanted to play basketball for Duke so he just did that instead.

He should have stayed at St. X where he could have teamed up with Johnny Wolf in the back court and replaced Robby Schoenoft (sp?) at QB.

For a brief time I believe his family was set to move to Cincy and he was going to attend St. X, yes.

He went to St X?

Some of my friends and my brothers' friends who played basketball at X played with him in open gyms at St. X during the summer. He was going to enroll but something happened to his dad's company back in New York so they moved back.

X would have won state his senior year had he stayed.

I was on the football team at the time. I was a sophomore and Paulus was a freshman and his older borther was a junior. Both came to a week or two of conditioning or two-a-days(cant remember which) with us in the summer and we supposed to be attending St. X in the fall. His dad's business partner, from what I undersatnd, died in a car accident and the family had to move back to NY.

Mooney was the QB at the time, and a very accomplished one at that as a senior and starter since his sophomore year, but I was hearing grumblings about Paulus comepteting for the job. Not sure Rasso would have done that to Mooney but Paulus would definitely have saw some time.

Paulus also had gone to the open gyms with the basketball team that summer and was just crushing everyone had on X's team. St. X would have had a basketball state title and football state title at least once in both if Paulus had of stayed.

I wonder if Paulus has the speed to be a West Coast type slot receiver. I definitely couldn't see him even as a back-up QB in the pros... look what the switch to WR did for Ronald Curry, Antwaan Randle-El, and Hines Ward.

Huh? I seriously doubt Paulus has that kind of speed. Why would he be a better receiver than QB. Not that he would necessarily be good at either after 4 years of no football.

I think the difference is that all those other guys were athletic, and Paulus is, well, not.

A QB would know the routes their receivers run, and since it's been so long since he broke down a football defense as a QB (not to mention he really doesn't have the pedigree at this point) he would be able to be a warm body at WR rather than just a sports anomaly at QB. Also, from what I've seen, you don't necessarily need to be very fast to be a good slot receiver in some systems. You just have to be tall-ish, have good hands, and be able to hold onto the ball when you get crushed by a free safety.

Okay, valid. I'm not saying he'll ever be an elite receiver, but he would be a warm body that could step into the slot where you don't necessarily have to be. If he runs a lot of slants, quick outs, and crossing routes, he just needs to be precise, not a burner.

You dont even know if he can catch. To say Paulus could be a WR at this point is just silly. QB is silly too but at least he was a phenom in high school and obviously has some ability there.

True, but there are about a thousand guys who meet that general description and actually played college football in line ahead of him.

How could he play at Michigan? Don't the four years at Duke count against eligibility in all sports?

Playing basketball doesn't waste his football eligibility, but he only has five years once he enters college. So he'd only have one football season left.

I have never heard of such a thing. Thats amazing. I guess not many people would do it because they just want to get on with their lives? I would have to thing there have been other multi-sport stars that could have done this. If Paulus did this I would guess there wouldnt be much interest in a 26/27 year old rookie QB in the NFL unless he just tore it up at Michigan. So if you arent going to make a living off of it I would think you would want to move on and get a job and make a living.

Is there a link to this by the way?

Interestingly, the Duke football coach is working him out as a Slot Receiver. God, I wish it would have occurred to me that being undersized with questionable arm strength might have precluded him from playing QB, but that his knowledge of routes might have led him to fit in the slot. I just wish I had that brainwave yesterday.

Purdue runs a pass-spread offense, and with the graduation of Painter, dimissial of Siller, they find themselves in need of a capable stopgap QB (and he probably has enough speed for the Big 10), Greg.... Head west young man, West Lafayette that is.

Ya, no kidding GO. Firehose, you were talking about an NFL slot receiver! Duke is barely division I. When Paulus is getting interest from an NFL team as a slot receiver then you can come back and toot your horn.

The three most overhyped, underperforming things I can think of offhand are Big Ten Football, Duke Basketball, and Greg Paulus. I am very worried that bears may take over the world when these things are combined.

On a side note, think about how jacked up Brent Musburger must be over this proposition.
