Sports Illustrated (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/highschool/04/10/facebook.ap/index.html)

College sports fans, be careful of the company you keep on Facebook. You might get yourself -- and the program you support -- in trouble.
That was the lesson this week for Taylor Moseley, a North Carolina State freshman who expressed a common-enough opinion on campus when he started the Facebook group called "John Wall PLEASE come to NC STATE!!!!"

More than 700 people signed up for the group encouraging Wall -- a local standout and the nation's No. 1 basketball recruit -- to pick the Wolfpack by national signing day next week.
But the NCAA says such sites, and dozens more like them wooing Wall and other top recruits, violate its rules. More than just cheerleading boards, the NCAA says the sites are an attempt to influence the college choice of a recruit.

Gary Parrish also wrote about this in his blog:

Worrying with Facebook is a waste of NCAA time (http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6271764/14461624)

Of note:

Is it realistic for us to be able to monitor them?

I love that question, because it shows N.C. State's compliance director has recognized what I've long insisted, that the NCAA would be better off worrying about legit and manageable problems instead of requiring cease and desist letters be sent to fans over stuff that doesn't really matter. Why worry about Facebook when agents are roaming campuses? Why worry about message boards when schools are funneling money to AAU coaches via Elite Camps?

See the other thread about IMG academy and their 'marketing division'.

The NCAA is worried about kids posting on facebook yet they are ok with basketball factories.

These guys make the NFL and MLB look like competent, well run, organizations.

The NCAA also bans some types of Vitamin Water:

Are those bans because of illegal substances contained in the drinks??? or because the NCAA doesn't get a percentage of the sales as they do with ccollege logo merchandise they market and sell????????:D
